"While I strive to be altruistic, there is still a selfish part of me. I almost am wary of writing a review because I hope to return back to Casa Paloma many many times and fear that everyone will realize what a magic place this is and there won't be any openings. Alas, we can not live our lives ruled by fear or scarcity, so i sit here to tell you the good word. This house is magic. Guatemala is magic. The town of San Marcos is magic. By magic, I mean that things that don't seem possible, become possible in a delightful and enchanting way. For example, I enjoyed staying in the house so much, walking in to town, chatting with the angelic gardeners Miguel and Mateo and the charming boat rides to explore other parts of the lake so much that when I called to change my flight to stay longer, the airline agent said, "You know what? I like you, I'm not going to charge you a change fee!" See....MAGIC! You can easily see from the pictures that it is a beautiful home, but you cannot see the lightning bugs that buzz around after sunset, the way the sky is pink some mornings just before dawn or feel the powerful healing energy of the sacred land around this home, town and country. Joyce's house and visiting Antigua is one of my most favorite trips I have been on and I look forward to going back again and again and trust that there will be enough time at the house for all of us. Blessings on your adventures and know that if you go to this house, you will receive extra blessings!"

"My wife and I stayed in Catherine's home for two and a half months while we explored and volunteered in Guatemala. It was incredible. The location of the home is about ten minutes outside the city of Antigua in a very small town called Cuidad Vieja. The small town is much quieter, cheaper and less polluted then Antigua. The property sits in fields of coffee and avocado trees where my wife and I along with Catherine's two dogs explored for up to two hours a day. You can see volcanoes from your bedroom balcony. There are horses on the property. Beautiful gardens. We plan on having large family gatherings here in the future if this property is still available.
If you are tired of being in a city and want to get away to relax go to Catherine's home. Don't waste your time paying for hotels in Antigua. You'll forget about all the things in life that you think are so important and start appreciating all the incredible nature on this Earth with the ones you love. That's what its like being at Catherine's house."

"My wife and I stayed at Rico's for our honeymoon, we couldn't have had a better experience.
First of all, we know very little Spanish and neither of us had been to the area. Rico was integral to giving us helpful details and preparing us for travel arrangements before we left. He was pleasant and did more than enough to make sure we arrived and enjoyed our stay. The same can be said of Carlos his housekeeper and gardener. He was easy to find and helped us with any request during our stay.
Secondly, the property itself is stellar! It is well kept, clean, with stunning views both in the yard and across the lake. My wife particularly enjoyed the large bathroom and shower. The details given on the listing are accurate when we come back will probably contact Rico again.
Also, the location is a perfect mix of seclusion and access to all the lake has to offer. We slept with the windows open and every morning awoke to the sounds of the Guatemalan highland coming alive. If you seek reflective peace and quiet or romantic privacy you'll receive both. At the same time, the public boat access is only a 10 minute walk along the lake shore.
La Iguana Perdida and ATI Dive Center are conveniently right next to the boat launch. Having our language difficulties throughout the day as we toured the different cities around the lake, La Iguana was our respite to find some English camaraderie. We met travelers and heard stories from all over the world before we headed back to the Casa. Don't forget to bring light for those short walks along the lakeside at night. Another English speaking attraction nearby is Los Elementos Adventure Center. They helped us arrange a tour of San Pedro and San Juan. Only 10 minutes past the boat launch, it was a delightful walk along the lake with many snapshots along the way.
In short, our days were filled with activity and culture, our afternoons were spent hashing out our adventures with new friends, and our evenings were spent relaxing with only the volcanoes as company."
