Overview of Lake Atitlan Vacation Rentals
Things to See and Do near Lake Atitlan Vacation Rentals
Lake Atitlan is recognized as being one of the deepest lakes in Central America, although its actual depth is not accurately known. It is estimated to be more than 340 meters deep. The lake is believed to have been formed when waters filled a volcanic caldera following an eruption some 84,000 years ago. The result is a beautiful emerald green lake that lies snugly between the remaining three volcanic peaks. Guided climbs of the peaks can be arranged but will require a good level of fitness. Some people rent a bicycle and cycle part of the way and then climb the rest of the distance to the summits. There is also a trail which circumnavigates the lake but the route is not very well marked. If you are keen for an exploratory walk on the trail, first check with the locals before setting out. Another way to explore the lake shore is to hire a boat and hop from one village to the next. You can also hire Jet Skis or kayak with which to explore the lake.
There is a large agricultural community around the lake shore and often there are markets where you can pick up some delicious fresh produce. Some of the fruits and vegetables grown in the area include strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, avocados, onions beans and squash. Eating out at any of the local restaurants is a delight. Spicy foods and interesting dishes make up the menus. The only town known to have some nightlife is Panajachel. Here, there are several bars and restaurants where the younger crowds congregate.
Getting to Lake Atitlan Vacation Houses
Lake Atitlan is located in Guatemala in Central America. For travelers from abroad, the main airport is in Guatemala City which is a two- to three-hour drive from the lake. The airport hosts airlines from North and South America as well as Europe. From Guatemala City, you can arrange a private transfer down to the town of Panajachel which is the major town on the lake shore. From there, you can get a bus to your vacation home or hire a boat to take you there. There are many boats that provide transport between the villages on the lake so getting around is easy. It’s best to check with the locals as to what the usual fare is, otherwise you may find the rate you pay is considerably higher.
People Who Travel to Lake Atitlan Lodging
Lake Atitlan is known for its scenic beauty. Surrounded by three volcanic cones, it makes a postcard perfect photographs, especially when the sun is low. It’s a place where you can relax and explore at leisure. There are several places of cultural and historical interest near the lake. Those with an interest in Mayan culture can tour the relics of this ancient civilization, located within an easy drive from the lake. There are also water sports available on the lake but mostly people come here to relax and enjoy the amazing views and scenery.
Seasons to Visit Guatemala Vacation Rentals at Lake Atitlan
Many people would say that Lake Atitlan has an ideal climate. It is never overly hot or cold because of its latitude and altitude. Lake Atitlan is located 1,560 meters above sea level and just 15 degrees north of the equator. It’s known for its warm sunshine throughout the year. The rainy season occurs between May and October but that seldom deters visitors. If you ask the locals, they will often tell you the rainy season is their favorite time of year.
