  • Exceptionally gorgeous property!!! AND IT IS FOR SALE!!!

"We stayed at the Castle Casa for 1 week in March. It was so lovely, relaxing, with incredible views of the lake and lots of mature vegetation and fruit trees. Beautiful construction - gorgeous built-in huge chiminea-style fireplace - the entire house including all rockwork and stone paving was hand crafted. The home had stylish furnishings with all kitchen amenities and we could not have asked for more. It is at the end of a recently-paved road and transportation is not a problem with all the small "taxicabs" available. If you want to walk, the town of San Pedro is only 10 minutes away. We would hands-down recommend this to anyone looking for a really good quality get-away at a fair price. And the owner does want to sell it!! Good investment!!!"

  • Perfect spot for our honeymoon.

"We were on honeymoon and couldn't have asked for a more perfect spot. We intended to stay for one week but ended up extending our stay to two! The view is like no other -- woke up every morning to the beautiful sight of San Pedro volcano and Lake Atitlan as the bed faces directly out the giant windows. Can slide the windows right open so you can feel the outdoors. Private dock allowed us to go for a nice swim every morning. Very peaceful and quiet. Far enough from the 'busy' streets of San Pedro and Panajachel although the towns were a nice, short boat ride across whenever we wanted to go. Pleasant walk into the town of San Marcos where we did our grocery shopping daily. We arrived pretty late in the evening for our first night but we were able to purchase some seafood and wine right on the property which was very convenient! The fully-equipped kitchen made cooking all of our meals very easy. Big, comfortable bed, fireplace, hammock, the most picturesque view, etc. what more do you need! The apartment and overall landscaping of the entire property is pretty impressive. Clean, spacious and well-maintained. Pierre and staff were very hospitable, attending to all of our needs but at the same time they were great about giving us our privacy. Always very helpful and just really nice people which was great. We would definitely stay here again and recommend to others!"

  • Great trip, family with kids

"Joyce, Just wanted to send an overdue note of thanks. My family of 6 (4 kids age range 6-10), accompanied by in-laws who hand carried their own pizza dough across the border, had an amazing time at your place on the lake. It was everything we'd hoped for and more, a genuine treat. Perhaps more than anything else, we were struck by the friendliness and warmth of the people we met, and just how relatively intact the indigenous cultures are. My 6 year old had broken her leg less than 2 weeks before our trip, and you probably aren't surprised to hear how helpful the locals were, whether it was hoisting her into a boat or just striking up conversation in the towns (no doubt we'd have missed a lot without my wife's spanish). Tim was great and I'm still grinding his coffee every morning back home. Miguel was also great, and brought his son to play soccer with ours. And of course those dogs, especially Pedro, he is one funny dog and the perfect companion when our 6 yr old had to miss things because of her broken leg. I could go on and on, but it hopefully suffices to say that the style, warmth and beautiful layout of your place was fully appreciated by our group! Thank you again, and we hope to visit again if the stars align in the future. Chicago, IL"

  • Perfect Lake House

"Gabi had a private boat pick us up to take us to the house which was better than the pictures show. The rooms were spacious. The avocado tree was dropping fruit so we made guacamole. We traveled by water taxi to all of the towns around the lake and got in plenty of hiking. Spanish would help but we got by with English. The lake is high so they built boardwalks to get from the house to town. In the afternoons you had to time the lake waves to not get splashed, but if you get wet it dries fast. The locals are really friendly and we got to know all of the restaurant owners. We did the Super Bowl at Norm's Restaurant/bakery as he has satellite tv. Best as a laid back scenic vacation."

Lake Atitlan Travel Tips

Things to See and Do near Lake Atitlan Vacation Rentals

Lake Atitlan is recognized as being one of the deepest lakes in Central America, although its actual depth is not accurately known. It is estimated to be more than 340 meters deep. The lake is believed to have been formed when waters filled a volcanic caldera following an eruption some 84,000 years ago. The result is a beautiful emerald green lake that lies snugly between the remaining three volcanic peaks. Guided climbs of the peaks can be arranged but will require a good level of fitness. Some people rent a bicycle and cycle part of the way and then climb the rest of the distance to the summits. There is also a trail which circumnavigates the lake but the route is not very well marked. If you are keen for an exploratory walk on the trail, first check with the locals before setting out. Another way to explore the lake shore is to hire a boat and hop from one village to the next. You can also hire Jet Skis or kayak with which to explore the lake.

There is a large agricultural community around the lake shore and often there are markets where you can pick up some delicious fresh produce. Some of the fruits and vegetables grown in the area include strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, avocados, onions beans and squash. Eating out at any of the local restaurants is a delight. Spicy foods and interesting dishes make up the menus. The only town known to have some nightlife is Panajachel. Here, there are several bars and restaurants where the younger crowds congregate.

From there, you can get a bus to your vacation home or hire a boat to take you there. There are many boats that provide transport between the villages on the lake so getting around is easy. It’s best to check with the locals as to what the usual fare is, otherwise you may find the rate you pay is considerably higher.
