"Pamakanya is a wonderful property with a great location on Lake Atitlan. It is ideal for a family group with plenty of comfortable space to enjoy the splendid views and beautiful surroundings. We found that the stairs to each bungalow were manageable (unlike some other properties on the lake). Hailing a boat from the dock was very easy. The ability to swim, kayak and hike right from the property was a huge bonus and really enjoyable. We are so happy that we had Maria cook for us each day. She is a delightful and charming person and is a fantastic cook. We liked talking with her, learning about her meal preparation, and it was really nice to have a dinner waiting for us when we returned from our adventures on the lake. We found the owner's house handbook to be very helpful as well as the guest book for recommendations on local restaurants and activities. We were lucky to experience the magical and spectacular experience of the New Year's fireworks all around the lake. Amazing!"

  • Great trip, family with kids

"Joyce, Just wanted to send an overdue note of thanks. My family of 6 (4 kids age range 6-10), accompanied by in-laws who hand carried their own pizza dough across the border, had an amazing time at your place on the lake. It was everything we'd hoped for and more, a genuine treat. Perhaps more than anything else, we were struck by the friendliness and warmth of the people we met, and just how relatively intact the indigenous cultures are. My 6 year old had broken her leg less than 2 weeks before our trip, and you probably aren't surprised to hear how helpful the locals were, whether it was hoisting her into a boat or just striking up conversation in the towns (no doubt we'd have missed a lot without my wife's spanish). Tim was great and I'm still grinding his coffee every morning back home. Miguel was also great, and brought his son to play soccer with ours. And of course those dogs, especially Pedro, he is one funny dog and the perfect companion when our 6 yr old had to miss things because of her broken leg. I could go on and on, but it hopefully suffices to say that the style, warmth and beautiful layout of your place was fully appreciated by our group! Thank you again, and we hope to visit again if the stars align in the future. Chicago, IL"

  • Perfect Lake House

"Gabi had a private boat pick us up to take us to the house which was better than the pictures show. The rooms were spacious. The avocado tree was dropping fruit so we made guacamole. We traveled by water taxi to all of the towns around the lake and got in plenty of hiking. Spanish would help but we got by with English. The lake is high so they built boardwalks to get from the house to town. In the afternoons you had to time the lake waves to not get splashed, but if you get wet it dries fast. The locals are really friendly and we got to know all of the restaurant owners. We did the Super Bowl at Norm's Restaurant/bakery as he has satellite tv. Best as a laid back scenic vacation."

Guatemala Travel Tips

Things to See and Do in Guatemala Vacation Rentals

Guatemala is located in Central America and shares borders with Mexico to the north, Belize and Honduras to the east, and El Salvador to the south. Its longest coastline is on the Pacific side. The country is probably best known for its magnificent Mayan ruins. The Tikal Archeological Park encompasses a vast area of Mayan ruins. Features include ancient temples, causeways, call courts, public buildings and plazas. Other sites include Aguateca, El Mirador and Quirigua. Anyone who has an interest in this ancient culture will be enthralled by the many ancient sites. It is a country that still holds on to many ancient cultural traditions. This is evidenced in the many different crafts that are on display at the local markets. It is a country that has had a rich and sometimes turbulent history. The many museums and monuments in the cities provide some insight into the local heritage. Easter time is when many local festivals are held and it is an interesting experience to be part of.

Guatemala's natural heritage is no less impressive. There are many adventure activities available for those who enjoy the outdoors. There are several lakes where you can enjoy a variety of water sports, including wind surfing and scuba diving. One of the most popular resort areas is Lake Atitlan. There are also a number of fast flowing rivers that are ideal for kayaking and whitewater rafting. For a more leisurely boat trip, you can join a cruise down the Rio Dulce. The river passes through lagoons and mangrove swamps that are home to the rare and shy manatees. You can also explore the countryside on horseback, bicycle or on foot, combining culture and nature in a great touring experience.

Seasons to Visit Guatemala Beach Houses

In general, the best time of year to visit Guatemala is during the drier months that run from October to April. The weather at the coastal regions can get very hot and is only tempered by the cooling ocean breezes. The peak travel season tends to be between December and April. The rainy season is from May to September. Rain showers tend to occur in the late afternoon and early evening, and generally clear up fairly quickly. The temperatures tend to fall quite sharply at night; although the skies are clear, it can get quite cold. Ensure that you have something warmer to wear after sunset.

Traveling to Guatemala

The primary travel hub in Guatemala is Guatemala City. The Aurora International Airport is located four miles south of Guatemala City. There is a shuttle bus service that links the airport and city center. Local taxis are also available if you would prefer a private transfer. The Aurora Airport has frequently scheduled arrivals from several major cities in the U.S. These include New York City, Miami, Atlanta and Houston. There are also direct regularly scheduled flights operating from Madrid. For Euopean travelers, this will be the most direct flight option unless you want to travel via the United States. The airport also has good regional links to neighboring countries in Central and South America. A secondary airport is located just outside of Flores. If you are interested in visiting the archeological sites of Guatemala, this is the closest airport to the Tikal Archeological Park.
