  • I'd Go Back in a Heartbeat!

"We enjoyed an amazing week at Henrietta's peaceful and lovely home on the laid back island of Roatan. I can't say enough about the relaxing atmosphere, the beautiful view and the amazing snorkeling available at this property. In addition to all of the above, we kayaked in the Bight, hiked the scenic road up to main road, and alternately relaxed and watched the calm ocean or were exhilarated by the crashing surf. It was a truly beautiful place to stay! Special thanks to Henrietta and Norma and her family for making sure we had everything we needed!"

  • Wonderful Week at Mariposa Del Mar

"We recently stayed at Mariposa Del Mar and could have not chosen a better villa for our vacation. It was everything we anticipated plus more. The villa is absolutely beautiful and very comfortable. We were picked up at the airport by Phil, son of owners Bruce and Nicky, who are such a delight. During the 45 minute drive to the house, Phil filled us in on island life, specifics at the house, etc. Yes, the nearest grocery store is 20 minutes away but Phil stopped for us to stock up on drinks and snacks for the week. This property is an escape from the busy, touristy part of Roatan. Just what we anticipated and wanted! Each morning began with coffee and ended by relaxing with a glass of wine on the deck overlooking the beautiful water. The sunsets seemed to get more beautiful each night. Rosa purchased the food and along with her daughter, Pearl, cooked a delicious breakfast and dinner every day. Rosa's homemade tortillas are delicious and ribs were to die for. (We are all now on a diet!) Tuesday night was pizza night, and we enjoyed meeting the guests in Fuego del Mar along with Bruce and Nicky. The meal and food cost is a bargain compared to what it would be for us to eat at a restaurant for 14 meals at home. Fausto, the caretaker, was just a cell phone call away when we needed kayaks, ice for the cooler, or anything else. The housekeepers even did our laundry! Each evening at dusk, our outdoor lights were turned on and candle were lit (thanks, Lester!). When we drove up to the gate, someone was always there to open it. EVERYTHING you could possibly need was provided. We had an amazing time at Mariposa del Mar, even with a few ants, bees, geckos, frogs, and lizards. That's just part of the experience! I fell in love with K-2, the house cat who paid a daily visit. Having the use of a car and cell phone was also very helpful. We had no problems with daytime driving but did not attempt at night. We hope to return to Mariposa del Mar one day! THANK YOU for an awesome week!"

  • Awesome!

"Roatan definitely lives up to the hype. Our condo was everything as advertised. The front desk bent over backwards to help us at every turn. The buffet breakfast was a good deal, and we took use of it frequently. There are much better restaurants for lunch or dinner down the beach or a short water taxi to West End, but we knew this going in. Like most tourist places, one is taken advantage of, somewhat, because one is locked into a resort. Food prices are high, but with some investigation, these can be mitigated somewhat. The dive shop on site was very helpful and I enjoyed diving there with 8 dives as well as a night snorkle that included seeing 4 octopi (very rare) The coral formations are incredible. We took an Island tour to Pigeon Cay which was suggested by the activities co-coordinator at the resort which was also expensive, but absolutely worth it. My wife snorkeled, while I dived. We had a blast. The steak and lobster in the water at the end of the trip was fabulous. We also did a Zip-Line recommended by the activities co-coordinator and it too was great! The property itself is very beautiful, and easily the best that is offered in West Bay. The condos are extremely well appointed, with rich wood, granite counter tops and the Wi-Fi was excellent! We could stream as much as we wanted. It was still public, so no sensitive information like banks info were accessible, but we were on vacation. There is an ATM nearby if one runs out of funds. The US dollar is excepted everywhere we went, but many things are cheaper if bought in the local currency (Lempira). The people at the resort, and most of the people we met are exceptionally friendly and truly wish to please, but they are laid back (Island time) and be prepared for slow Island time service. This is NOT a condemnation, just a cultural observation. If you want a laid back vacation, with most of the amenities you are used to, coupled with amazing water activities like SCUBA diving, paddle boarding etc. Infinity Bay is just what the doctor ordered. I would definitely return."

  • Best property on West Bay Beach!

"We just returned from a week at St. Mac's villa and it definitely was one of our favorite vacation spots. Last year we were at Infinity Bay and walked by St. Mac's everyday. I made it my goal to book this place and did so as soon as we got home. We were not disappointed, you just walk out the door onto your own sand, beach chairs, beach!!! No more resort, waking up at 7am to save a chaise by the pool. This was one of the best decisions we made! You never have to leave the West Bay, walk out the door, go diving, snorkeling, swimming! Watch the most beautiful sunsets every night! We stayed in the beachfront, 1 bedroom lower level unit. Very Spacious updated, this unit had every amenity, we were very happy!! Thank you for sharing your home!!"

Bay Islands Travel Tips

The Bay Islands are a number of Caribbean Islands to the east of the Central American country of Honduras. Lying in the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, this unspoiled tropical paradise offers a laid-back vacation spot with plenty of optional activities. The best known of the Bay Islands is Roatan which remains largely uncommercialized, although it has excellent restaurants and diving. Other islands include Utila, Guanaja and Cayos Cochinos.

Bay Islands Vacation Rentals Offer the Perfect Home Away From Home

Those looking to enjoy an island-style retreat will love a spacious vacation rental. Typically painted in pastel island colors and set in tropical gardens amidst bougainvilla, palms and exotic plants, many vacation homes have private swimming pools. Imagine waking to the sound of the ocean and having breakfast on the verandah while planning the day’s activities. With your own private vacation home, you can take an afternoon siesta, watch the sunset with a drink on the terrace and generally do as you please. The spacious bedrooms, bathrooms and cool living areas make it the ideal choice for romantic breaks and honeymoons, and for families who want their own space.

Things to do on the Bay Islands of Honduras

The activities offered on Bay Islands are varied and extensive. Water-based activities include kayaking in the calm waters or sailing, fishing, snorkeling and diving. The Bay Islands are in one of the most extensive reef systems in the world with excellent visibility. See many types of soft and hard corals, sponges, beautifully colored fish and marine life. Relax on the sandy beach or go searching for exotic seashells. Horseback riding along the water’s edge is a relaxing way to experience these idyllic shores, or head inland to explore some of the jungle areas. Take an eco-tour with a guide to see the natural wildlife of Bay Islands or take a dolphin-watching trip. Glass bottom boats are great ways to experience the diverse marine life on the reef. You can even island-hop or go cave exploring.

Bay Islands Travel Options

The Bay Islands of Honduras are very convenient and easy to get to, being just a two-hour flight from Miami. Sol Air connects Miami with San Pedro Sula on the mainland twice daily and there are direct connections to the islands of Guanaja, Roatan and Utila.

Taca airlines operate direct flights from both Miami and Houston to Roatan and offer connecting flights from Los Angeles, New Orleans and San Francisco. Once on the islands, it is easy to walk, cycle or use a local taxi or boat service to get around.

Places to Visit from Bay Islands Resorts

Roatan is a picturesque and unspoiled island with a hilly interior covered with lush greenery. The main beaches are West Bay beach rentals with its white coral sand beach, Camp Bay and Paya Bay. Roatan is known as a world-class diving destination and the reefs, the second largest after the Great Barrier Reef, are protected as a national treasure. The Cayman’s Trench sees the reef suddenly drop to a depth of thousands of meters and the occasional whale shark may be seen. Closer to shore, beginners can dive in the protected lagoon waters which have no strong currents. At the end of the day, head for the dockside bars and restaurants, and enjoy a cocktail while viewing the spectacular sunset. Roatan also has a small museum and botanical garden.

Mainland Honduras makes a great day out. Arrange a visit to the ancient Mayan city of Copán. The impressive ruins depict the amazingly advanced culture of the Mayans, centuries ago. River rafting is also a fun activity and a great way to navigate the wildlife of the tropical rainforest.

Weather and Climate in Honduras

The weather on the Bay Islands is different to that on mainland Honduras. The islands enjoy tropical sunny days with heavy rain showers at times. The wettest months are September, October, January and February. The islands’ high season is from February to April when visitors escape from the cold winter temperatures further north. The average water temperature is a balmy 29 C which is 84 F.
