  • Best Vacation

"Eric and Karen were excellent hosts and provided extremely useful information during our stay. The house was very nice. The beaches were beautiful and only got better as you head towards West Bay. Snorkeling right from the beach was great. So much to do, so little time. To quote my daughter, "This was the best vacation ever"."

  • Waterfront Bliss

"A great location far from the crowds of West Bay & West End. Wonderful to be right on the water and have free use of the kayaks to explore. Property was very clean, and we're fussy. Dennis was helpful with any questions we had. A perfect relaxing place in paradise."

  • A Special Place...

"This was my third stay at the Sunset House and I decided to stay in the back apartment above the caretakers quarters. It was great! The "Turtle Apartment" Has a full kitchen, full bath and two AC units! There is a very comfy couch that folds out into a bed in the living room too (not shown in the photos or video). My friends were staying in the main house and I didn't book until a week before my trip. The owners were very accommodating with my late booking by the way, no stress whatsoever. Now for the updates... every time I come back there are updates... i love this place... Solar Panels: The new solar panels keep the hot water hot... even outside in the outdoor shower. These are only on the main house (not the Turtle Apartment) however. New Bathroom: The owners added a new bathroom in the back part of the main house so you don't need to go inside or upstairs if your just running in from snorkeling or swimming. Makes it really convenient when nature calls. The Sailboat: I rented the 15 foot Hobie Cat one day and had so much fun I rented it again the following day. It's really easy to use and sooo much fun. It seats 4 but goes a lot faster with just 2 people... or even faster with just one person!!! New paint and rugs and shades in the main house. Very nice updates! See the video for the latest. AC: The two new AC units in the Turtle Apartment work great! They have remote controls and keep the apartment very comfy during the night. There is also a new fan in the downstairs bedroom (of the main house) fixed to the wall. Staying in the back apartment was great. I really felt like one of the locals (not a tourist) and enjoyed getting to know the neighbors. Joni the caretaker lives downstairs and is extremely helpful with whatever you need. The entire estate is very safe. My only complaint would be that I only stayed for one week... I need to stop doing this. Book the Sunset House for two weeks. TRUST ME. Overall I highly recommend the Sunset House and everything you see in the pictures and video is 100% accurate."

  • Would defiinitely go back, but some pointers ...

"First off, I would definitely go back. The house is spacious and well maintained in general. The amenities are great, again in general. Snorkelling off the beach in front is fabulous. And the gentleman who looks after the house is absolutely wonderful. However, the internet access was slow and at the very least needs to have a password put on it. I refused to use it for business due to that insecurity. The AC unit in one of the bedrooms didn't work at first and it wasn't all the effective when it do work. It made a difference, but it never got cooler than "quite warm" even with all doors and windows to the bedrooms closed and the AC on all night when we slept. The golf cart has a few tricks you need to be aware of to keep it going, and the headlight didn't work the entire time we were there. So overall I'd say the place is great but it deserves to have the level of care stepped up a notch. Having said that, remember that I would definitely go back. One solid tip - you really need to rent the golf cart. It's a good 20 minute walk to town depending on what part you want to access. And a final tip - if you snorkel off the beach in front, angle toward the right for easier access to deeper water. If you go straight out there are lots of shallows to get through and it's tough to avoid the coral. Enjoy!"

Bay Islands Travel Tips

The Bay Islands are a number of Caribbean Islands to the east of the Central American country of Honduras. Lying in the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, this unspoiled tropical paradise offers a laid-back vacation spot with plenty of optional activities. The best known of the Bay Islands is Roatan which remains largely uncommercialized, although it has excellent restaurants and diving. Other islands include Utila, Guanaja and Cayos Cochinos.

Bay Islands Vacation Rentals Offer the Perfect Home Away From Home

Those looking to enjoy an island-style retreat will love a spacious vacation rental. Typically painted in pastel island colors and set in tropical gardens amidst bougainvilla, palms and exotic plants, many vacation homes have private swimming pools. Imagine waking to the sound of the ocean and having breakfast on the verandah while planning the day’s activities. With your own private vacation home, you can take an afternoon siesta, watch the sunset with a drink on the terrace and generally do as you please. The spacious bedrooms, bathrooms and cool living areas make it the ideal choice for romantic breaks and honeymoons, and for families who want their own space.

Things to do on the Bay Islands of Honduras

The activities offered on Bay Islands are varied and extensive. Water-based activities include kayaking in the calm waters or sailing, fishing, snorkeling and diving. The Bay Islands are in one of the most extensive reef systems in the world with excellent visibility. See many types of soft and hard corals, sponges, beautifully colored fish and marine life. Relax on the sandy beach or go searching for exotic seashells. Horseback riding along the water’s edge is a relaxing way to experience these idyllic shores, or head inland to explore some of the jungle areas. Take an eco-tour with a guide to see the natural wildlife of Bay Islands or take a dolphin-watching trip. Glass bottom boats are great ways to experience the diverse marine life on the reef. You can even island-hop or go cave exploring.

Bay Islands Travel Options

The Bay Islands of Honduras are very convenient and easy to get to, being just a two-hour flight from Miami. Sol Air connects Miami with San Pedro Sula on the mainland twice daily and there are direct connections to the islands of Guanaja, Roatan and Utila.

Taca airlines operate direct flights from both Miami and Houston to Roatan and offer connecting flights from Los Angeles, New Orleans and San Francisco. Once on the islands, it is easy to walk, cycle or use a local taxi or boat service to get around.

Places to Visit from Bay Islands Resorts

Roatan is a picturesque and unspoiled island with a hilly interior covered with lush greenery. The main beaches are West Bay beach rentals with its white coral sand beach, Camp Bay and Paya Bay. Roatan is known as a world-class diving destination and the reefs, the second largest after the Great Barrier Reef, are protected as a national treasure. The Cayman’s Trench sees the reef suddenly drop to a depth of thousands of meters and the occasional whale shark may be seen. Closer to shore, beginners can dive in the protected lagoon waters which have no strong currents. At the end of the day, head for the dockside bars and restaurants, and enjoy a cocktail while viewing the spectacular sunset. Roatan also has a small museum and botanical garden.

Mainland Honduras makes a great day out. Arrange a visit to the ancient Mayan city of Copán. The impressive ruins depict the amazingly advanced culture of the Mayans, centuries ago. River rafting is also a fun activity and a great way to navigate the wildlife of the tropical rainforest.

Weather and Climate in Honduras

The weather on the Bay Islands is different to that on mainland Honduras. The islands enjoy tropical sunny days with heavy rain showers at times. The wettest months are September, October, January and February. The islands’ high season is from February to April when visitors escape from the cold winter temperatures further north. The average water temperature is a balmy 29 C which is 84 F.
