  • Hobbie's Hideaway is a hidden gem!

"Another great stay at Hobbie's Hideaway! Hiring Miss Betty, an islander cook with culinary skills that could challenge to be the best on the island, was the smartest decision I made! Miss Betti cooked so many amazing dishes, cleaned the kitchen after serving our family and made our family vacation less work for mom so that I could enjoy the rest and relaxation as well. Miss Laura coming in to clean up behind my pack of boys definitely took a load off of mom as well! John and Sue's hospitality and great island "home" make the stay a lot of fun for all. Between fishing and snorkeling trips with Ronald, the boat captain and property caretaker, the kayaks and paddle boat, snorkel gear and amazing beachfront, grilling on the beach, maid service, traditional island cook, massive covered deck with stereo system and big screen, great security from Taboo the island "wonderdog", the knowledgeable and personal service whether it be seclusion and privacy or fun gatherings amongst the guests, Hobbie's Hideaway is the best, smartest and reasonably priced island getaway and home away from home. You couldn't ask for better location, view, lodging and hosts than you will find at Hobbie's. John, Miss Sue, Ronald, Miss Laura and Miss Betti make vacation and island flair relaxing, fun and always a great time! I know we will keep coming back to Hobbie's Hideaway as long as John & Sue will keep letting us come!"

  • Great Location!

"My family of four spent 8 nights at La Casa Gaviota Azul. Before we arrived, Jami sent us a map, directions and some very helpful links and suggestions. She met us upon arrival and we really appreciated her letting us check-in early as our youngest wasn't feeling well. The accommodations were very clean, comfortable, and updated with a seaside decor. We had all the comforts of home, nothing was missing. We loved being right on the beach in a quiet area, away from the more hectic (and hot!) West End/West Bay. The trade winds were strong while we were there, so we weren't able to snorkel near the house, but the dive boats anchored right outside daily, so I'm sure it must be fabulous. I was impressed with the local care takers who picked up trash along the beach, raked, and rinsed the salt and sand off the patio and windows. They were very friendly and even dropped off a conch shell for our girls one morning. The sheltered lagoon area at Parrot Tree Plantation has cabana beds, seating areas, and canoes for rent. The pool area was nice too! It's a great place to relax if you don't feel like heading out to explore the island, and it's close to the house. If you are here, as others have suggested, be sure to check out Cal's Cantina. The food was wonderful and priced right. Zip lining into Gumbalimba Park and the dolphin encounter at Anthony's Key were also big hits with the kids. There are other recommendations in the "house manual" and several guide books for you to browse through. I would definitely recommend staying here - you won't be disappointed!"

  • Loved Bayside Hideaway

"My husband and I went to Roatan with our daughter(23) and a friend for one week. We loved staying at Bayside Hideaway and would go back in a second. The "private" beach was lovely. It was easy to rent kayaks from Las Rocas next door. The snorkeling was good and even better just walking 10 mins down the beach. We commented all the time how lucky we were to get the best place around(we had never been to Roatan before). We will go back and would recommend to anyone. Absolutely the best location of any place around. We liked being 5 minutes(walking) away from the busier west bay beach but close enough to take advantage of all the restaurants and grocery and beautiful beach with snorkeling and paddle boarding."

Bay Islands Travel Tips

The Bay Islands are a number of Caribbean Islands to the east of the Central American country of Honduras. Lying in the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, this unspoiled tropical paradise offers a laid-back vacation spot with plenty of optional activities. The best known of the Bay Islands is Roatan which remains largely uncommercialized, although it has excellent restaurants and diving. Other islands include Utila, Guanaja and Cayos Cochinos.

Bay Islands Vacation Rentals Offer the Perfect Home Away From Home

Those looking to enjoy an island-style retreat will love a spacious vacation rental. Typically painted in pastel island colors and set in tropical gardens amidst bougainvilla, palms and exotic plants, many vacation homes have private swimming pools. Imagine waking to the sound of the ocean and having breakfast on the verandah while planning the day’s activities. With your own private vacation home, you can take an afternoon siesta, watch the sunset with a drink on the terrace and generally do as you please. The spacious bedrooms, bathrooms and cool living areas make it the ideal choice for romantic breaks and honeymoons, and for families who want their own space.

Things to do on the Bay Islands of Honduras

The activities offered on Bay Islands are varied and extensive. Water-based activities include kayaking in the calm waters or sailing, fishing, snorkeling and diving. The Bay Islands are in one of the most extensive reef systems in the world with excellent visibility. See many types of soft and hard corals, sponges, beautifully colored fish and marine life. Relax on the sandy beach or go searching for exotic seashells. Horseback riding along the water’s edge is a relaxing way to experience these idyllic shores, or head inland to explore some of the jungle areas. Take an eco-tour with a guide to see the natural wildlife of Bay Islands or take a dolphin-watching trip. Glass bottom boats are great ways to experience the diverse marine life on the reef. You can even island-hop or go cave exploring.

Bay Islands Travel Options

The Bay Islands of Honduras are very convenient and easy to get to, being just a two-hour flight from Miami. Sol Air connects Miami with San Pedro Sula on the mainland twice daily and there are direct connections to the islands of Guanaja, Roatan and Utila.

Taca airlines operate direct flights from both Miami and Houston to Roatan and offer connecting flights from Los Angeles, New Orleans and San Francisco. Once on the islands, it is easy to walk, cycle or use a local taxi or boat service to get around.

Places to Visit from Bay Islands Resorts

Roatan is a picturesque and unspoiled island with a hilly interior covered with lush greenery. The main beaches are West Bay beach rentals with its white coral sand beach, Camp Bay and Paya Bay. Roatan is known as a world-class diving destination and the reefs, the second largest after the Great Barrier Reef, are protected as a national treasure. The Cayman’s Trench sees the reef suddenly drop to a depth of thousands of meters and the occasional whale shark may be seen. Closer to shore, beginners can dive in the protected lagoon waters which have no strong currents. At the end of the day, head for the dockside bars and restaurants, and enjoy a cocktail while viewing the spectacular sunset. Roatan also has a small museum and botanical garden.

Mainland Honduras makes a great day out. Arrange a visit to the ancient Mayan city of Copán. The impressive ruins depict the amazingly advanced culture of the Mayans, centuries ago. River rafting is also a fun activity and a great way to navigate the wildlife of the tropical rainforest.

Weather and Climate in Honduras

The weather on the Bay Islands is different to that on mainland Honduras. The islands enjoy tropical sunny days with heavy rain showers at times. The wettest months are September, October, January and February. The islands’ high season is from February to April when visitors escape from the cold winter temperatures further north. The average water temperature is a balmy 29 C which is 84 F.
