"We spent our third summer at Casa Portugal and continue to be charmed by Jiquilillo. The house is amazing and the caretakers are wonderful people. We have stayed a month here for the last three summers and my sons and I feel at home. Follow Sue and Peter's suggestions for a wonderful experience. Once in town, you will discover all types of activities, from a Volcano hike to a trip to the Padre Ramos estuary. There is a great surf/body board break right in front of the house, and a huge porch with a tiled table where we spend most of our time. I strongly recommend connecting with the folks at Rancho Esperanza. It is a great place to volunteer and enjoy getting to know the staff and guests (typically backpackers from all over the world). We arrange transport from the airport with the owners and stock the kitchen in Chinandega on our way in. We don't bother with a car. The house is exactly as described, and Juan and Jamileth are available to help with anything you need. We (my sons are 12 and 14) hope to return again next summer!!!"

"We needed a place to house three families, including 6 adults and 7 kids. After lots of searching, we were just happy to finally reserve a place with room for us all. On arrival, we realized that Casa de Sol was so much more than we thought. Unparalleled views of the beautiful Laguna de Apoyo; the top of Volcan Mombacho peaking over the rim of the opposite ridge; troupes of Howler Monkeys in the trees; large and luxurious bedrooms; well stocked kitchen and spacious living areas; huge infinity pool overlooking the lake; helpful staff; all of this and more made for the vacation of a lifetime. We've stayed in many vacation rentals in Nicaragua, and this one was by far the most well supplied and maintained. It really feels as if you are invited to share in the owners' personal retreat.
If you have small children, be advised that there are some architectural aspects of the property where style and views were valued over safety, such as no railing on the balcony overlooking the pool/lake. This wasn't a surprise to us as we were well-advised beforehand by the owners. Our group included children with the ages of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9, and after setting some ground rules about where they could and could not go we had a fantastic time.
We highly recommend Casa el Sol and look forward to our next visit."

"We were invited to come for an art getaway to Casa Rio. At first I was disappointed it was not on the ocean, but as soon as we arrived we fell in love with the place. The architectural details are rather contemporary zen and it takes advantage of the air. With slatted ventsing around the main sala we need'nt worry about being too warm. The river location was such a delight. There are monkeys everywhere and they entertained us morning and night. There were other flora and fauna to enjoy as well. The home was well stocked for a rental. We cooked our own meals and all was available for our usage. The outdoor showers were interesting although not very private. Hacienda Iguana is such a beautiful place, with a well maintained golf course, spectacular beach and shady walking trails. The new restaurant on the beach, Pili's is excellent. We had dinner and lunch there. All was way above par and Pili herself is a delight. Will definately go there again and recommend Cas Rio."

"My GF and I decided to escape the funky Fall weather in the Colorado Mountains and get a beach fix before ski season. This place was the answer. OK, everyone said the weather in October was always raining. Not true. Some rain but the GREEN of the land and the uncrowded quiet made up for it.
It was our second visit to SW Nica. We knew this was the general area we wanted, and Hacienda Iguana was pretty much exactly it. Just modern enough, and as secure as anyone could want.
Online, this 1BR Condo looked like everything we needed and it didn't disappoint when we got there. Very clean with a full sized kitchen and good appliances. Modern bathroom with a sweet glass block shower. And a provided cell phone made staying in touch with the nearby managers Seth and Lindsey especially easy when we had a few questions. Their staff was also exceptional in answering our needs at anytime.
Super waves all along the beach most days didn't disappoint, even though it was the *off season*. The light sand beach (Playa Colorado) is arguably the best in the country, and even has good shelling for those who might enjoy that sort of thing. Also a nine hole golf course within walking distance. The pool right out the door and downstairs is well maintained and appreciated after a day in the ocean.
We made up for the closed (only in October) restaurants by stocking up with everyday groceries on the way there with our driver, and easily arranged to return for more after a week. Inexpensive fresh fish/lobster from the small fishing village next door were the main courses for patio sunset dinners, accessed via a quick and fun ride on a rental motorcycle from NSR. Or there's some phone numbers in the information folder to call for delivery if desired. Good, funky restaurants there too, that remain open in the off season.
All in all we left after 3 weeks completely satisfied and refreshed, though a little sore from surfing. Would definitely recommend this Unit for a couple wanting what we did. It's comfortable, not too small, and not too big. Perfect..."
