  • Amazing property, wonderful location

"My husband and I just came back from an 8 day stay at Tortuga Azul with another couple, and to say we had a wonderful time is an understatement! The house is absolutely stunning and the photos do it no justice at all. It is a straw bale construction, so the walls are all curved and organic looking, which is really different to what we are used to in the north but the result is amazing! The pool and the outdoor area are perfect, so private and peaceful. You really feel like you are out on your own in the middle of nowhere! William the caretaker keeps everything very clean, and we saw only a couple of bugs (no cockroaches-yay!!). The other reviews have talked about how writing things down in english was really the best way to communicate with him and they were not wrong! We had a few minor water problems during our stay and he fixed them within a couple of minutes, he really is a great asset. The location was great, far enough away from town for it to be nice and secluded, but also close enough that you can walk (during the day time only, and it takes about 30 minutes). Taxis can get a little expensive however, and I think we were overcharged quite a bit while we were there. We were getting charged $15 each way in/out of town, and once or twice we were even charged $20 each way! I have heard that this is unusually expensive, however if it is the norm I would recommend hiring the owners car with the driver Elie as that would probably be cheaper. Lots of the reviews mention Elie, and he really is such a gem. A genuine person, and he seems to really enjoy his job. The other reviews however make it sound like he is quite readily available, however this was not the case when we were there. We needed to book him at least one day in advance as he was so busy, and he doesn't like to work past 5 as he has 2 young children, so keep that in mind! He will recommend other taxis however if you need them! The only downside about the house is the noise of the dogs barking at night, but that is nothing some ear plugs can't fix! Also the internet is complicated and slow, but the owners are trying to rectify that! In short-GO AND STAY HERE!! It was a truly wonderful stay and we can't wait to return as soon as we can!"

  • Wonderful beachfront property

"This was our first trip to Nicaragua and we were looking for something with a great beach in an authentic Nicaraguan town. Casa Kaya definitely fit the bill. Josh responded to all our email quickly and our arrival and check-in went smoothly. The pre-arrival information was very helpful in finding our way out of Managua and to the property. We were met by the housekeeper Flora and the night watchman. This house has wonderful outdoor spaces for relaxing and the beach is sandy, very quiet and great for playing in the waves. The property is well maintained and clean and it felt very secure. The kitchen has all the necessary amenities to make a good meal and we used the outdoor grill also. The bedrooms are very basic. The main downside to them is the lack of closet space (so we lived out of suitcases on the floor) and the beds/pillows were not particularly comfortable but we all slept OK. Also there are no beach towels provided and there is no washing machine, so plan accordingly. There is a small store across the street where you can get a few basics but major shopping needs to be done in Leon. Poneloya is off the gringo trail and therefore there is not much available in terms of restaurants and activities. Leon and some of the other beach towns are easily accessible by car on well paved roads. As a side note, we were travelling with two children and never felt unsafe. We enjoyed Nicaragua more than Costa Rica and Panama."

  • An amazing location...

"Me and a friend stayed at Margaret's house for 10 days in March. First of all, it's a really nice and clean house! Everything we needed was there, and then some more. The open kitchen is amazing and so is the outdoor living room. The rooms are big and the beds comfortable. With the fans and the AC it's not too warm at night. So, as far as the house is concerned, everything was perfect. Then there's the location!!! The beach is close, really close... Like 20 seconds walk close... It's not a big beach at all. It's quite small and there's not much to do. Only 2 little restaurants/bars and a surf rental place. But, that is exactly what we were looking for so it was perfect for us. Not a lot a people during the week days (mostly other tourists coming from San Juan for the day to learn how to surf... They are usually gone by 5pm and then the beach gets really quiet for the night). We noticed that there was a lot more people during the weekends but maybe it was just a coincidence (and by a lot more people I mean 25 people max)! The water is perfect if you want to learn how to surf... The waves are not to big but not small either. We've met some really nice local kids who were more than happy to give us some tips! And as for the owners and the housekeepers they were all REALLY nice and accommodating. We got to see Margaret pretty much everyday. She answered all of our questions and was really helpful. I made a mistake when I first made the reservation and she was really accommodating and nice about it. As for Francisco and Flor, they are really nice as well. They helped us make local calls and they were there every time we needed something. The only downside is that the house is a bit far from the city (15 minutes cab ride, about $15 one way). But as I said earlier we were there to enjoy a quiet and warm beach, so we didn't really go to San Juan that often. If you want to visit the area and go out to San Juan often, I definitely suggest renting a car. If you are worried about the weather you can stop right now. It was sunny and +35 everyday. A bit windy at times but it's a good thing because if not it would be almost too warm (if there's such a thing!). Thanks for a great vacation!!!"

  • Madeline's Place - My favoreite

"We've been visiting lovely San Juan del Sur annually since 2003. We only discovered Madeline's Place in 2009 and have anxiously returned each year since. Enrico and Maddie make us feel welcome as we arrange reservations via email. The place is amazing... ...beautiful two-bedroom apartment with a nice kitchen, reliable appliances, room for the crew (Rhoda and I usually stay in the main bedroom while surf buds bunk it in the additional room), wireless internet with good signal, a TV that provided all the Royals playoff games, and the pool. Did I mention the pool? Who goes surfing all day in Nicaragua and then gets to enjoy a Flor de Caña and OJ by the beautiful pool. Even the neighbors have been charming (one can't have too many good friends). Angela is warm and takes great care of the place on schedule. The staff provides impecible security and treats us like family, and over our five years they have become like family. Each afternoon at 5:30, it's time to walk across the road to photograph another spectacular sunset. It's a short walk along the beach to any restaurant in town. We rely on Allan Carcamo, the best surf guide in Nicaragua to get to Playa Madera, Hermosa, Remanso, etc. daily. Even the Super Poli (the grocery store) is walkable. I offer my heartiest recommendation to Madeline's Place. Just don't make your reservations for the last weekend in September into the first days of October. I hope we'll be there..."
