"We spent a week at Casa Portugal and really enjoyed our time there. Arriving in Managua we took a taxi to the Leon micro bus terminal and spent a couple of nights in Leon before taking a micro bus to Chinandega. We arranged for a taxi (with the owners son) to meet us and after stopping at the grocery store we drove to the beach house. Very comfortable with a well supplied kitchen. Love the huge, high windows and doors and comfortable couch. Very open/airy which was fantastic. The caretakers are great and announced when the tortilla sellers were outside and even supplied a chair to wait for the bus! Besides fresh tortillas we bought coconut bread (which makes great french toast) and fish in town. The hammocks are great for relaxing and very private.
Besides being a fabulous house, the location is the best, as it sits right at the beginning of town. Looking towards the ocean, going left is a long expanse of mostly uninhabited beach. To the right is the fishing village of Jiquilillo. I enjoyed watching the fishing boats leave in the afternoon and return in the morning. One of my favorite activities is walking beaches and looking for sea shells. I was not disappointed. The beach goes forever and is flat and easy for walking. The surf was small when we were there, but good for swimming right out front.
We took the bus one day to the community of Padre Ramos and on the way back stopped at Monty's for the wifi. It is easy to get around without a car. Nice community and Casa Portugal is the place to stay!"

"My family spent a month at Casa Irie from mid December to mid January and we had a great time. The house is very comfortable and laid out very well for use by families. we enjoyed the foosball and the guitat which were nice touches and used the ipod dock for listening to music. The highlight of the place though is the infinity pool and the spectacular view of Nacascolo bay especially the sunsets every night. we would stand in the pool and watch the sun go down. It was beautiful. The caretakers, Ben and Grethyl was so nice and helpful and kept the place spotless every day. It really added to the pleasure of our trip. Of course Nicaragua has it's problems with infrastructure and power. Electricity was sometimes spotty and the road to the house required first gear on some of the hills. we had rented an old land cruiser and it was no problem. Still, that is no fault of the property itself and it only added to the adventure and did not decrease our enjoyment of our time there. The town was fun, nice places to eat and we made good use of the barbecue grill on the deck. The beaches were great. We often were the only ones on the beach or there might be three or four other people and we would joke how crowded the beach was. My grandkids got to see baby turtles hatching at la Flor beach and we spent a couple of lovely days at Coco beach, Hermosa beach and Marsella beach. My grandkids got to go ziplining, horseback riding and took surfing lessons. Rebecca, and Dan, the owners kept good contact with us by Email. The wifi at the house was excellent and they helped with any minor problems we had. I would have no hesitation going back to Casa Irie and would recommend it to anyone looking for a rental in San Juan del Sur."

"My husband and I visited here in December for my birthday unfortunately it rained almost everyday of our trip. However, it was still one of the most amazing locations we have ever been to. The The house is amazing if you are looking for a true Swiss Family Robinson adventure this is it. The island has almost no tourism most people head to Little Corn which is not really our style. When you arrive at the airport ask for the cab driver Arturo he was extremely helpful he only speaks Spanish, but this was not a prolem for us. Don and his family are helpful and welcoming but yet still give you more than enough privacy. I can not wait to return!"

"My husband and I just came back from an 8 day stay at Tortuga Azul with another couple, and to say we had a wonderful time is an understatement! The house is absolutely stunning and the photos do it no justice at all. It is a straw bale construction, so the walls are all curved and organic looking, which is really different to what we are used to in the north but the result is amazing!
The pool and the outdoor area are perfect, so private and peaceful. You really feel like you are out on your own in the middle of nowhere! William the caretaker keeps everything very clean, and we saw only a couple of bugs (no cockroaches-yay!!). The other reviews have talked about how writing things down in english was really the best way to communicate with him and they were not wrong! We had a few minor water problems during our stay and he fixed them within a couple of minutes, he really is a great asset.
The location was great, far enough away from town for it to be nice and secluded, but also close enough that you can walk (during the day time only, and it takes about 30 minutes). Taxis can get a little expensive however, and I think we were overcharged quite a bit while we were there. We were getting charged $15 each way in/out of town, and once or twice we were even charged $20 each way! I have heard that this is unusually expensive, however if it is the norm I would recommend hiring the owners car with the driver Elie as that would probably be cheaper.
Lots of the reviews mention Elie, and he really is such a gem. A genuine person, and he seems to really enjoy his job. The other reviews however make it sound like he is quite readily available, however this was not the case when we were there. We needed to book him at least one day in advance as he was so busy, and he doesn't like to work past 5 as he has 2 young children, so keep that in mind! He will recommend other taxis however if you need them!
The only downside about the house is the noise of the dogs barking at night, but that is nothing some ear plugs can't fix! Also the internet is complicated and slow, but the owners are trying to rectify that!
In short-GO AND STAY HERE!! It was a truly wonderful stay and we can't wait to return as soon as we can!"
