  • A Relaxing Vacation Off The Beaten Path

"Our recent stay at Villa Pavela met expectations of a leisurely vacation in a quiet semi-rural area, just moments away from a beautiful secluded beach. The house was exactly what we envisioned, bright and airy with a well stocked kitchen opening onto an inviting living and dining area. We whiled away hot afternoon hours reading in the hammocks and evenings started with the vision of spectacular sunsets. Air conditioning was available in the bedrooms but at night with the brisk winds, open windows and the ceiling fan in the master bedroom we slept comfortably, although occasionally awakened by the outbursts of howler monkeys. Eliza the caretaker kept the house sparkling clean and prepared delicious Nicaraguan meals while her partner Levys maintained the beautiful garden that surrounded us with a riot of exotic flowers and plants. As in many developing countries the electricity would occasionally fail for awhile but Eliza was quick to connect the backup system that adequately met our needs during those periods. Playa Remanso provided many refreshing swims each day in crystal clear water that we often had entirely to ourselves. We enjoyed walks along the playa and up through the hills to Playa Tamarindo, the virtually deserted beach just to the south. Just south of Tamarindo, easily accessed by a 15 minute drive from the Villa, is the spectacular beach of Playa Hermosa. After paying a small entrance fee you can spend the day enjoying the beach where little palapas provide shade and the restaurant serves tasty quesadillas and cold cerveza. The short drive into San Juan del Sur brought us to a bustling centre where we shopped for delicious fresh vegetables and fruit in the mercado, picked up artisanal bread at Pan de Vida, local coffee at El Gato Negro and fresh fish, shrimp and langosta from the fishermen’s kiosks located at the southern end of Paseo del Rey. Pali grocery store near the turnoff to Playa Remanso, stocked groceries and supplies, dairy products and fresh meat which we easily transported to Villa Pavela in the coolers provided. Ela, one of the owners, responded quickly to our inquiries and was a wealth of local information. We would recommend renting a vehicle for trips into San Juan del Sur and to explore the beautiful coastline north and south of town. For a complete break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life Villa Pavela provides a magical retreat we hope to visit again soon."

  • Gorgeous property!

"Our family and friends (4 adults and 2 kids ages 9 and 6) stayed at this property in late November. It is truly stunning. The highlight, without any doubt, is the beach. Broad, beautiful sand; nice moderate waves; and virtual no people. The kids had an excellent time building sand castles and boogie boarding (boards can be rented at the restaurant down the beach). We've had several vacation stays at Pacific coast beaches (Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica) and this is our favorite. The property unit itself was also a very pleasant suprise. It was spacious, immaculate, and well-equipment. There was plenty of space to cook and socialize. The bedrooms upstairs were comfortable and gave our group of 6 plenty of room. The washing machine was also handy. The property is a bargin. As mentioned in other reviews, the potential downside--an upside for many--is the relative isolation. There is not a whole lot of development in this area, which boggles the mind considering its beauty. There is one adequate but unexceptional restaurant on the beach. We ate breakfast and dinner there several times, but I'd recommend bringing some groceries in from San Juan del Sur rather than relying too heavily on the restaurant. We didn't have a rental car which limited our mobility some, but had no trouble arranging transport to see the turtles at la Flor. The property and beach are perfect for anyone looking to relax with family and friends in peaceful, gorgeous setting."

  • Amazing property, wonderful location

"My husband and I just came back from an 8 day stay at Tortuga Azul with another couple, and to say we had a wonderful time is an understatement! The house is absolutely stunning and the photos do it no justice at all. It is a straw bale construction, so the walls are all curved and organic looking, which is really different to what we are used to in the north but the result is amazing! The pool and the outdoor area are perfect, so private and peaceful. You really feel like you are out on your own in the middle of nowhere! William the caretaker keeps everything very clean, and we saw only a couple of bugs (no cockroaches-yay!!). The other reviews have talked about how writing things down in english was really the best way to communicate with him and they were not wrong! We had a few minor water problems during our stay and he fixed them within a couple of minutes, he really is a great asset. The location was great, far enough away from town for it to be nice and secluded, but also close enough that you can walk (during the day time only, and it takes about 30 minutes). Taxis can get a little expensive however, and I think we were overcharged quite a bit while we were there. We were getting charged $15 each way in/out of town, and once or twice we were even charged $20 each way! I have heard that this is unusually expensive, however if it is the norm I would recommend hiring the owners car with the driver Elie as that would probably be cheaper. Lots of the reviews mention Elie, and he really is such a gem. A genuine person, and he seems to really enjoy his job. The other reviews however make it sound like he is quite readily available, however this was not the case when we were there. We needed to book him at least one day in advance as he was so busy, and he doesn't like to work past 5 as he has 2 young children, so keep that in mind! He will recommend other taxis however if you need them! The only downside about the house is the noise of the dogs barking at night, but that is nothing some ear plugs can't fix! Also the internet is complicated and slow, but the owners are trying to rectify that! In short-GO AND STAY HERE!! It was a truly wonderful stay and we can't wait to return as soon as we can!"

  • Simply Excellent

"We loved staying at Christine's unit. The beach is a couple of steps away, the unit is pristine and very well equipped and we were away from all of the noise. Great for families."
