  • We had a great stay at Mar Y Sol!

"PROS: -House was perfect for two couples. -Loved the kitchen and open living/dining room design. -On-site property managers were pleasant and attentive. -We regularly purchased cokes-in-bottles from Flor. -Very short walk to a nice beach that we enjoyed. -Beautiful sunsets from the bar/restaurants steps from the house. -Very short drive to SJDS and grocery store. -Fun day trip to Playa Coco (45 minute drive on very rough road) CONS: (Keep in mind that you are visiting Nicaragua, not Hawaii, so certain aspects (e.g. the smell of burning trash) are unavoidable.) -Air conditioning unit was in one bedroom, the other bedroom got pretty hot even though we turned the A/C unit on around 4PM and left both bedroom doors open. -Barbed-wire fence gate leading to property was a bit of hassle to open and close, and slightly dangerous. But you see this kind of gate/fence all over Nicaragua. -Also, the directions for getting to the house were a little unclear once we got to the driveway, since the "gate" just looks like a normal fence. -They're building a house next door so construction noise was very audible. -Two mice in the kitchen, one found in a cupboard (dead) and one seen running around (alive). All of these "CONS" didn't really detract from the wonderful time we had a Mar y Sol, but I thought they deserved mentioning. I will also say that I was a bit nervous about crime in the area after reading different reports online, however we didn't have a single problem during our week-long stay at Mar y Sol. Hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did!"

  • If people ask, "Why Nicaragua?"

"We heard that a lot before we left. What we can now reply is that it is a beautiful and friendly country with gorgeous beaches. San Juan del Sur is very clean with no street hustlers. Playas Maderas and Hermosa were fantastic with some surfing even in the winter month. Best of all was our stay at Casa Miramar. We were a group of 8 adult family and friends. The villas are high class, spacious and well-equipped. The staff kept it clean and us fed. I absolutely recommend getting the meal plan. No meal that we ate at a restaurant was as good as the food we were served right at home. On our last night, Marta made a plantain pie that was unlike anything we had tasted anywhere else, and it was totally delicious! It was such a treat to get breakfast every day, often with pancakes. My family has rented through vrbo for many years all over the world and we all agreed that this was our favorite. We used local taxi drivers to get to the beaches and to Granada and Masaya. It saved a lot of money over the tours. Many in the group went to the yoga studio every day and nearly everyone got a massage , right in the villa, on the last day. Vanessa and Will dropped by and they and Ingrid were always helpful and accomodating. Here are my only warnings: the villas have many stairs and are not suited to people who are not mobile; the hill to the villas is steep-no problem for most but I was winded; December is festival time and we often had trouble sleeping because of loud music and firecrackers; one bedroom is not shown in the photos--it is small with twin beds, high windows and no view; the pool area is not fenced so young children would have to be closely supervised. All in all, we would give it ten out of ten stars!!!"

  • Best family vacation ever!

"Our family spend 5 weeks at CASAMARI in April/May... and absolutely loved it. We were very cautious travelling with 3 kids under 12 to a foreign + less fortunate country where few people spoke English (and we didn't speak Spanish!). Everything from the booking/deposit/communication with the owner to the property was excellent. The owner Mari was amazing in all communications, giving us peace of mind before and during our stay. When we did encounter problems/needed assistance, Maria/Raul were there to help. The house itself is beautiful large 2 story house, with the top story being the 'house', and the bottom being 3 side by side condos. Everyone shares a pool and BBQ area on the bottom level, while the deck on top is private to the house. The house is very large (pictures don't reflect the size). There are 2 huge bedrooms (king, x3 doubles) and a third smaller room (double). Wireless internet was excellent... and very important as we had to work down there. Words can't describe the 180 degree views of the bay, the sunsets - whether looking out of the 8' windows inside or outside on the covered deck. Location is approximately 2 blocks from the beach, and 3 blocks from town. No car is required... in fact it's cheaper to hire car/drivers or take shuttles to/from the neighboring areas. Life is simple and slow... which is why we went. While there is lots to do, don't expect many first world amenities, or decent medical services for that matter (bring a good first aid kit-antihistamines and antibiotic ear drops are essential). Food choices are simple, local, cheap - whether buying from the market or eating out (we did it all with no bad experiences). The beer is always cold and amazing... often a great meal replacement for the adults! Expect occasional power outages common in Nica... Having a cell phone was important for communication (minutes/data are cheap). Expect roosters and dog barking late night/early am, and music to be heard til 2am on party nights (Semena Santa is a 7day 24hr party... LOUD!; bring earplugs if you are light sleeper!). This simply added to the atmosphere... and we felt safe the entire time. We highly recommend CASAMARI, and feel it is easily the best house rental in SJDS. We simply can't wait to return!"
