Tola is a small beachfront community located on Nicaragua’s Pacific coastline. It is approximately two to three hours southwest of Managua. To get there, you will fly into Managua International Airport. The airport hosts most North American airlines. There are several flights that operate each week between major hubs in the U.S. such as Ft. Lauderdale, Atlanta, Houston and Miami. If traveling from Europe, you may need to route via one of these cities or another Central American cities. From Managua, the easiest option is to hire a car and drive down to Tola. Tola is known as one of the premier surf destinations worldwide. On either side, it has two main surf areas that are within a few hundred meters of one another along the coast. Playa Colorado is to the south and known as the Nicaraguan Pipeline. The area is a sand-bottomed beach break which is fed by the waters streaming out of the river mouth of the Rio Colorado. This famous surf spot is where most of the Nicaraguan surfing videos are filmed. The second prized surf spot is just to the north of Tola and known as Ponga Drops. Here, there is a deep water reef that amplifies the swell, providing excellent surfing conditions. The result is an impressively large rolling wave that allows for long rides and carving turns.

For non-surfers, the area still has plenty of attractions. Golfers can enjoy the 9-hole golf course as a regular daily outing. For those looking for something more energetic, you can get in touch with some of the local tour operators. They can arrange guided horseback riding or hiking excursions. If you are looking for a thrill, you can go on a treetop canopy excursion through the rainforest.
