The Tocumen International Airport is located to the east of Panama City. It makes life a lot easier in Panama if you can speak some Spanish. The best way to get around is by taxi or bus and it helps if you can communicate accurately with the drivers. Taxis are relatively inexpensive but make sure that you only use those that are painted yellow and numbered. For first-time visitors, rental cars are not recommended. The road signage is not particularly good and the traffic is chaotic at the best of times. Rather, make use of public transport or hire a local tour operator for private transfers.

The Panama Canal is one of the city’s great attractions. The Miaflores Visitors Centre is a 20-minute drive from the city center and well worth a visit. The center houses a museum with interesting interactive exhibits of the history and construction of the canal. A tour includes a movie on the building of the canal. From the terrace outside the center, you can see ships passing through the locks. There is a snack bar and full-service restaurant where you can enjoy a meal. Another way to experience the canal is to go on a half-day or full-day leisure cruise which takes you on a transit through the area.

The Casco-Viejo is the historical heart of Panama City. Built in 1671, the area is a collection of beautiful colonial architecture that displays Panama’s rich and diverse history. Many of the buildings are being restored and restaurants and cafés line the streets. Visit the French Monument which is a tribute to the 22,000 Frenchmen who lost their lives while building the canal. Other sites include the 16th-century convict dungeons, the 17th-century Church of the Golden Altar, as well as the ruins of a 17th-century convent.

The Panama-Viejo or Old City is where the ruins of the first settlement in Panama can be seen. Once a thriving city that was home to more than 10,000 people, it was the base of the Spanish conquests that looted the fortunes of the Inca Empire. The city came under the attack of Henry Morgan, a notorious English pirate in 1671 which resulted in a fire that effectively left the city in ruins. There is an interesting museum here, although most of the exhibits are in Spanish.
