The City Walls of Dubrovnik were first laid out in the 13th century and work continued on them for almost another 200 years. They were once the main defensive structure of the ancient city of Dubrovnik. Today, they stand tall as one of the city’s great attractions.

The Franciscan Monastery was built in the 14th century and enclosed within the walls of medieval Dubrovnik. It is hailed as being one of the most beautiful Romanesque cloisters in all of Dalmatia. The monastery houses a museum with interesting artifacts from the different centuries. There is also a working pharmacy which has been operating from within the monastery since 1317.

The Cathedral Treasury is a site that has housed three magnificent cathedrals over the centuries. The first was a Byzantine building built in the 17th century. The next resident was a magnificent Romanesque cathedral. This was unfortunately destroyed in the 17th century by a violent earthquake. The current cathedral was the building erected following the earthquake and is a magnificent Baroque cathedral designed by an Italian architect. The cathedral was completed in 1713.

Onofrio’s Fountain is in a small square near the Pila gate. It is walking distance to the Franciscan Monastery. The fountain was originally built by famous Italian architect Onofrio della Cava in 1438. This too suffered severe damage in the earthquake of 1667 and was later repaired and restored to its former glory.

Benefits of Staying in Vacation Rentals in Dubrovnik

When Croatia first opened up as a tourist destination, it was one of the most affordable Mediterranean regions to visit. Having grown in popularity over the years, it is now on par with other European destinations. Vacation apartments, however, offer affordable ways to stay in Dubrovnik. You can cater your own meals and use the public transport system to get around. In addition, you get a much more authentic experience of Croatia. Apartments are available in a variety of sizes and can cater to couples, families or groups of friends traveling together. The living areas are comfortably furnished and the kitchens are equipped with most modern appliances. Many vacation homes are located near public transport stations or bus stops so you can easily get around and view the city sights.

Best Time of Year to Visit Croatia Vacation Rentals

Dubrovnik is located on Croatia’s Mediterranean coast and benefits from a relatively mild climate. The most popular times to visit are during the warm summer months which run from June to September. The peak tourist season is during July and August because of the European school holidays. The heat of summer is moderated by cool breezes that blow in from the Mediterranean Sea. Winters are mild and wet. The most rain falls between November and January and this are considered the low tourist season. However, with the many historic sites and museums available for viewing in Dubrovnik, this is in fact a good time for cultural enthusiasts to visit. Most of your sightseeing will be done indoors, and you can avoid lines and crowds by traveling during the off-season.
