  • Perfect location, cozy and homey cottage, helpful owners -- just what we wanted!

"I can't recommend this cottage highly enough -- especially for families with young children. I stayed for one week with my husband and two small daughters -- a 2-year-old and a 6-month-old. I was truly sad to leave -- it felt like it had become our home. Emmanuelle was responsive (and very patient!) to all my questions about the cottage and how it would work for my young children. (Such as could we leave the shutters open in their room in the August heat and not worry about an intruder? Not an issue because of the clever ways the shutters can be closed, she patiently explained -- and was so correct.) She even arranged for a travel cot for the baby to sleep in. She really went above and beyond what she needed to do to be helpful and make us feel welcome. Once we arrived, it really felt like we were staying in a home. The location also couldn't be better. Every morning my daughters and I would open the shutters and take big breaths of the sea air. So close to the market, the bakeries, the beaches, and the downtown. We didn't have a car and never missed it. We took the bus from the airport, walked the few blocks from the bus stop to the cottage, and walked everywhere else after that. Some other highlights: Fast wifi -- so we could stream youtube videos of french lessons! And listen to the BBC in the morning. Lots of helpful binders of information about the town. Useful leftovers from previous visitors -- such as beach toys, rain umbrellas, some very good books, and even a beach umbrella that we used every day. Regular communication from Emmanuelle checking in on our visit. Like other reviewers noted, the door and front windows do open right up onto the street and sidewalk. But even with two children, we were not troubled by the noise or the presence of people walking by. There seems to a courtesy rule that people walking by don't peek in! I put the pram in front of the open door and I never worried that my toddler would run into the street. Other reviewers also commented on the "coziness" of the cottage. Yes, it's small -- but that was part of the fun -- all being together. And there was a lovely park around the corner and the beach just down the road if anyone needed to get away for a moment of silence (often necessary with 2 young children). I really can't recommend this place highly enough! I already hope to return."

  • Super location

"Two couples, two weeks. First the "pros": The site of the former watermill couldn't be more charming. The sounds of the waterfalls and birds are delightful, and though away from the tourist action (you MUST have a car) this is pretty convenient for sightseeing and dining. It's a unique home with lots of character. Cons: There are no supplies stocked for tenants. Bring your own salt & pepper, cleaning supplies, paper towels, other paper products, garbage bags, toiletries, etc. There's a large Carrefours market nearby, but it closes mid-day and Sunday afternoons. Some maintenance issues. Special note: Owner and her charming adult daughter were extremely helpful when we had a car problem and were stranded at house. They were life-savers for us. Equipment: note that there is no telephone. If you stay in high summer, note that A/C is only one portable unit on second floor. "Canoe" was not available to us."

  • Wow - a really perfect stay

"We had a truly wonderful week at Pascal's superb chateau in the Perigord. The chateau is even better than it looks in the pictures - a super mix of great character with excellent facilities. Would highly recommend the place for groups of friends or families - comfortably sleeps 10+ people with plenty of personal space. Pascal was the consummate host - welcoming, efficient, and highly responsive. His recommended chef, Laurent, was also superb. In very close proximity (10-15 mins drive) is the beautiful town of Perigueux - with everything from Roman history to Michelin-starred restaurants (L'Essentiel was excellent)! It is also a good base for exploring the wider Perigord region. Overall - highly recommended!"
