One of Europe's great attractions is its rich history and culture. In Languedoc Roussillon, one of the most notable cultures is that of the Cathars. A religious group that started in the 11th century, it became the dominant religion in the Languedoc region in the 12th century. However, many of the Cathar views directly opposed those of the Roman Catholic Church and this resulted in open animosity between the two organizations. In the 12th century, the Vatican led a crusade against the Cathars with the objective of eliminating them. The genocide which lasted for two generations resulted in the death of close to 500,000 people, including many who were Catholic. Today, many of the cultural sites are linked to this history. There are many memorials dedicated to the Cathar martyrs and the Cathar castle ruins still stand tall. The many beautiful cathedrals, abbeys and churches in the region are worth visiting if you have an interest in architecture. There are numerous museums that showcase different themes and aspects of the region's history and culture.
