The Pays-de-la-Loire region is largely an agricultural region whose landscape is dominated by the Loire River. The Anjou region straddles the Loire river and is known as one of the most historically rich areas in France. It was the home of kings, nobles and royalty throughout the Middle Ages. Expansive chateaux and mansions still overlook the surrounding countryside and many have been turned into museums or are open for visitors. Some have been reduced to ruins, telling tales of conquest and division through the ages. The area is a photographer’s dream. Le Mans is most widely known for its 24-hour motor racing events; however, this is not the town’s only attraction. History enthusiasts can meander through the historical town center and visit some interesting museums. Rochemenier is the largest known troglodyte village in the region. There is a unique underground chapel and a number of cave farms.

The region is characterized by quiet villages and beautiful scenery. Hedgerows, woodlands and small scale cultivated lands make up the landscape. Horses have been bred extensively through the Pays-de-la-Loire region and horseback riding is a popular way to explore the various sites. Bridal paths traverse the scenery and link the many villages via scenic paths.

Medieval architecture has been well preserved in the region. Aside from the many chateaux, visitors can be enthralled with cathedrals, abbeys and sculpted village squares. Fresh produce markets are often held in the center of the towns and villages, and bargaining for items is half the fun when visiting the various stalls.

Best Time of Year to Visit Pays-de-la-Loire Villas

The Pays-de-la-Loire region has a relatively mild climate, although winters can get rather cold and wet. The popular tourist season, like most of Europe, is during the summer months which are from May to September. Traveling earlier or later in the season will allow you to avoid the tourist crowds and you may also benefit from cheaper accommodation deals since it's outside of peak season.
