Because the city was once divided into east and west, there are two major international airports in Berlin. The one used by most international airlines is Tegel International airport which is located in the northwestern part of the city. This airport hosts the majority of the European Airlines as well as a number of North American and far eastern airlines. Germany’s national carrier uses Tegel for its domestic connections. There are buses that connect the airport to major hubs within the city but no rail or underground connections exist. The nearest station is a five to 10 minute walk away. Most people make use of a taxi on arrival to get to their destination within the city. The second airport is the old East Berlin Airport called Schoenefeld and located in the southeastern part of the city. Schoenefeld hosts many of the low-cost airlines that operate throughout Europe. Schoenefeld Airport has good connections with the S-Bahn and U-Bahn which are the rail and underground networks of Berlin. Once in the city, these are the easiest ways to get around. There are regular schedules that run throughout the day and only moderately less frequently at night.

Berlin was extensively destroyed during World War II and only a few of the ancient historical buildings were left standing. Much of the west of Berlin was rebuilt in modern styles while the east remained in relics until the unification of Germany. The result is that many of the old buildings in the east have now been restored to their former glory yet the west of the city has a distinctly modern vibe. There are a number of interesting museums that are worth visiting. These include Checkpoint Charlie Museum which was a famous gateway between the American and Russian Sectors; The Deutches Historisches Museum which details Germany’s ancient and modern history; and the Judlisches Museum which details the history of Jews in Berlin, not only during the Second World War but dating back to earlier centuries. The Brandenberg Tower is probably one of Berlin's most famous landmarks as is the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church.

You have the comfort of your own living space and cater for your own meals which is much more affordable than eating out. You also have the freedom to come and go as you please and tour on your own timetable.

Naturally, Berlin's history is the major attraction for many visitors but once there, you will discover the many other treasures that the city has to offer. The city has a vibrant nightlife, with quirky and sometimes bizarre restaurants and nightclubs. The center of the city has become the hub for the most prominent restaurants and is the place to mingle. Berlin also has some excellent shopping and many great museums and historical sites to visit.
