  • Wunderschön and delightful!!!

"I could not have asked for a better location for my research visit and short family vacation to Swabia. Indeed, arriving a week before my family so that I could undertake some research in Stuttgart, I was welcomed by the incredibly generous and gracious host and owner. Hedelfingen is not far at all from downtown Stuttgart (20 mins max with the U-Bahn), which made my research at the Hauptstaatsarchiv a breeze. And, the town itself is quite cute, with wonderful neighboring towns as well (e.g., Rohracker, Obertürkheim, Uhlbach, Esslingen, etc.). All amenities are within 5 mins by foot, and the links to public transportation are amazing and most convenient. When my family arrived, including 13-year-old twins, we felt right at home, and the owner made sure that we had everything we needed, like parking for our rental car. For the week that they joined me, my family and I made several excursions throughout Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Other reviewers have noted how ideal the location is for sightseeing, and they are not at all wrong. We visited parts of Bavaria, Lake Constance, the Black Forest, and lots of Württemberg. The property was perfect for us. We enjoyed a number of meals around the table, rested comfortably, and even spent one afternoon just relaxing and reading in the apartment. Although as an historian of Swabia I am clearly biased, I must say that modern-day Württemberg is an undiscovered gem for tourism. So much to see, so much to do, so much good food to eat, and so few tourists. The other tourist traps of Germany pale in comparison. Of course, now that I have written this, I am sure to incur the wrath of my Swabian friends, who like the fact that they are not overrun by tourists. Seriously though, I cannot overstate how pleasant, warm, and friendly this region is. There is nothing quite like walking through the "Weinberge" of Swabia. The views are amazing, and the wine is "nicht so schlimm auch." After my family returned to the States, I had another 2+ weeks of research in the city archives of Göppingen. They were most productive and most enjoyable, particularly because the transportation was so convenient to the location, everything was close by, and the owner stopped by regularly to invite me to various events. Indeed, if I hadn't had so much to do in the archives, then I easily could have spent the time exploring and enjoying the region and the warm friendship of the owner! Most highly recommended!!!"

  • Back again!

"It’s a long way from Australia, but Berlin and Christa and Elias’ hospitality keep drawing us back to this fascinating city. After our memorable week in Berlin in 2011, when we stayed with Christa and Elias, we had been looking forward with great anticipation to a return visit. Once again, our time in Berlin was unforgettable. We particularly enjoyed returning to Calvinstrasse and Christa and Elias’s great hospitality and thoughtfulness. As with our first visit, every day was packed with so much and to know that we could return to the comfort and convenience of their flat to relax and re-charge our batteries for the next day made our stay even better. Yet again, time beat us, so hopefully, we’ll be back again to our home from home in Europe’s most tourist friendly city—well, that’s how we think of it! With our thanks and best wishes to Christa and Elias."
