The airport is linked to the city via the s-bahn which is the local tram and underground system. This provides an inexpensive and convenient way to get into the city. Alternatively, you can use the public bus system which has connections throughout Munich. For private transfers, there are taxis and hotel shuttle services. Once in the city, the s-bahn and buses provide easy access to all the major tourist sites. Unless you plan to visit the areas outside of the city, it’s not really necessary to rent a car to get around. Munich also has an extensive bicycle path system and bikes can be hired locally. This is a very convenient and inexpensive way to explore all that the city has to offer.

Some people will argue that the best time to visit is in the wintertime when the surrounding hills are covered with snow. The lights of the Christmas markets light up the gray skies and the aromas of roasted chestnuts and gluhwein fill the air. Other people return to Munich year after year for the annual Oktoberfest which is a celebration of beer and local culture that takes place each year in October. It’s a very festive occasion with huge beer halls and equally large mugs of beer being consumed by locals and tourists alike. In the summertime, Munich quite literally comes into bloom. The long summer days invite relaxation at corner cafés, leisurely strolls through the city parks and endless exploration of the city’s historical sites.

Cycling and rollerblading are popular pastimes and great ways to get around the city. Football fans may want to catch a game at the impressive Allianz Arena which is the newly built local soccer stadium. The Olympic Park, the site of the 1972 Olympics, has both indoor and outdoor sports facilities which are open to the public. Munich is also a large business district which has some excellent shopping, restaurants and entertainment centers. It’s a great place for young adults, families and older travelers to visit.

Great Attractions in Munich

The Hofbrauhaus is possible Munich’s most famous attraction. A giant beer hall complete with Oompa bands and maidens toting beer mugs, it is worthwhile experiencing. Some people argue that it has become a tourist trap so if you’re looking for something a little more authentic, pop into any one of the local pubs. The beer is just as good no matter where in Munich you drink it.

Munich has some of the most well preserved Barroque castles in all of Europe. The Nymphenburg and Schleissheim palaces are magnificent pieces of architecture. Built from 1701, the Schleissheim Palace was only finally completed in 1726. The palace also houses the State Gallery of Baroque Painting. This is known as the “new castle.” The Altes Schloss Scheissheim was built in the early 1600s and is a superb example of a late Renaissance residence. The building was damaged quite badly during the World War II but extensive restoration work took place in 1972 to restore it to its former grandeur. The palace houses various museum and art exhibits from the Bavarian National Museum.
