Greek Islands Travel Tips

Beautiful Greek Islands Vacation Rentals

There are more than 6,000 Greek Islands scattered around the clear, blue Mediterranean waters; however, only 227 of them are inhabited which cuts down your choices a little! The largest island is Crete, and other equally popular islands for villa vacations include Santorini, Corfu, Rhodes and Mykonos. Each has its own character, history and charm, and the beaches are idyllic.

The Advantages of Greek Islands Vacation Rentals

Many holiday-makers visiting the Greek Islands choose to stay in vacation villas and apartments. These rentals offer great value for money. They may be in authentic white-washed Greek cottages in small villages and towns, or they may be more modern apartments overlooking the beach--the choice is yours. For those who want to escape from the bustling resorts, a vacation rental in a more rural location makes perfect sense. They offer great walking and nature-watching opportunities. On a small island, you are never far from the beaches and spectacular sea views. It is very easy to pick up some local wine and “meze” such as olives, cold meats and cheese, and enjoy a feast on your own private terrace.

Greek Islands Travel Made Easy

The islands are served by three main international airports on the islands of Mykonos and Santorini, and at Heraklion on Crete. Many airlines offer budget flights from all over Europe. Alternatively, flights can be taken to Athens. A ferry from Piraeus can then be used to complete the onward journey to your chosen island.

Once on the island, a car is not essential. Rent a motor scooter to reach some of the outlying sights and beaches or use the local bus service. The islands are well served by small cruise boats and passenger ferries which hop between the islands and ports.

Things to do on the Greek Islands

The beaches are the main attraction of the beautiful Greek Islands. They range from quiet coves to resorts with all the toys including jet skis, banana boat rides, parasailing, waterskiing and windsurfing. Mountain biking and horse riding are great ways to explore the interior or you could take a trip on a sailing boat on the gentle azure sea. Snorkeling and diving are also available in the warm waters. Island hopping makes for a popular day out. The Greek islands are steeped in ancient history and each island has its own archaeological sites, Roman ruins, historic churches and museums.

The Different Islands Offering Greek Islands Villas

The island of Santorini is known for its volcanic black and red sand beaches and breathtaking views from its volcanic peaks. The lively capital of Fira is great for the young at heart, while Oia private villas offer quiet romantic vacations for couples and honeymooners.

Crete has a distinctly local culture with unspoiled mountain villages, secluded beaches and delicious Greek food in the local tavernas. Hikers will enjoy the challenging trek to Samaria Gorge.

Mykonos vacations homes have some of the best beaches, the craziest nightlife outside Ibiza and prices to match! Hydra is quite the opposite, with pretty Greek villages and historic homes which can only be reached by mules. Cars and motorbikes are banned on the island and nightlife consists of a candlelit dinner beneath the stars.

When to Visit the Greek Islands

The Greek Islands enjoy a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. Generally, summers are sunny with temperatures from May to September ranging from 20 to 30 C (68 to 86 F). The most southerly islands (Crete, Rhodes and Zante) are generally the warmest and driest. The more northerly Greek islands such as Corfu and Lesbos have more rain showers, keeping the landscape lush and green. Throughout the summer, the coastal breezes keep the islands fresh and pleasant. The spring and fall seasons are very nice with colorful flowers blooming in spring and warm seas in the late summer.
