An Ancient City With a Vibrant Modern Culture

The main city here is the ancient city of Cork which traces its history back to a monastic settlement founded in the 6th century. The remnants of the old city wall and some of the original gates still remain. It is the third largest city in Ireland, after Belfast and Dublin. The River Lee runs through the city via two channels so there are many bridges to cross while exploring. While wandering this beautiful old hilly city, it is worth noting the high gateways from the street level. This is from the days when the houses were once boathouses where the merchants would bring goods by river. It is a small, compact city, ideal for walking or seeing by bike. Many companies offer rental bikes. There is also an excellent golf course just three miles from the city center. For families with children, visit Chuckies Playzone or the fascinating Cork City Goal, where the preserved prison is filled with full-sized wax figures featuring famous "rogues" from Ireland’s history. It was here that many thousands of the country's "undesirables" were held before being transported to America and Australia. Children will also enjoy a visit to Foto Wildlife Park to see the many animals such as cheetahs, penguins and wallabies.

Kiss the Blarney Stone at the Famous Castle

Along the coast, there are charming typically Irish villages, with wonderful pubs and fabulous coast paths to explore and enjoy. The quaint village of Baltimore, on the southwest coast, is famous for its stunning scenery. The village features the remains of a 17th-century castle. At Desmond Castle, visitors will enjoy the unique International Museum of Wine. Head to Clonakilty to discover a lively musical and arts community and enjoy the model railway village, depicting the area's many attractions as scale models. Take a cable car over to Dursey Island as this is the only method on and off this uninhabited island.

The most internationally renowned place in Cork is Blarney, with its famous Castle. The tradition for visitors here is to kiss the Blarney Stone. The Castle dates from 1446 and is one of Ireland’s most important historical sites. To kiss the stone, visitors must first climb 110 steps to the spiral staircase at the top of the castle, and then hang backwards over the battlements to reach the stone! It is a challenge, "to be sure" as they say in Ireland, but well worth the effort.
