"My first memory of my first trip to Ireland will always be that of Aghaboe. My partner and I arrived at Dublin airport, exhausted and harried, and drove straightaway to this manor house in the country. It's a good thing we did: The caretaker cheerfully made us tea and showed us through this welcoming old stone house.
The pleasures were many: luxuriating in a deep soaking tub, sipping lovely Spanish wines from their wine cellar, meandering through the nooks and crannies of the house, and exploring the impressive library. At night Orion shone brilliantly in the velvet sky and in the mornings a step outside revealed a forgotten era. Here you can still breathe sweet soft air and gaze across the ridiculously green grass with cattle grazing to an ancient crumbling abbey.
From here we visited the surrounding countryside and nearby Kilkenny, but returning to the huge old house and its lovely grounds was most restorative. Though we went on to find my own ancestral land and many more touristed sites, this place remains special--authentic and unforgettable."
