The primary airport in the region is West Port Airport Knock. The airport is located in County May and within a 90-minute drive from all major towns and cities in the region. Several low-cost European airlines have regularly scheduled flights between London and other European hubs. If traveling from further afield, you could route via Dublin and from there get a domestic flight up to West Port Airport Knock. The region has an extensive bus network which is fairly reliable. If you are planning on doing a lot of sightseeing in the region, it’s probably best to hire a car as not all bus schedules offer frequent connections. Many people like to bike around the region so they can enjoy the outdoors while they visit the many sites and places of interest.

Westport House is one of Mayo County’s most well known attractions. The house is a tribute to Grace O’Malley who was otherwise known as Granuaile the Pirate Queen of Connaught. During the 16th century, Granuaile ruled the seas and coastline in the west of Ireland. At the time, she was the leader of the O’Malley clan and believed to be at the root of all the rebellions that occurs in western Ireland during that time. She owned many castles in the region and Westport House was later built on the ruins of one of these sites. There is still a part of the original castle that can be viewed in the castle basement which is known as the dungeons. Westport House was built in the 18th century and designed by two well known architects of the time namely, Richard Cassels and James Wyatt. It sits on an expansive estate with immaculate gardens, terraces, a lake and magnificent views over the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the estate is the Country Park which is an entertaining amusement park. The park is open throughout the summer season and offers pirate ship rides, exploration of Treasure Island, slides, rides and play parks.

There are several historical sites, castles and museums in Mayo County that are well worth visiting. Guided tours can be arranged through one of the local information offices. Alternatively, you can explore on your own.

The best season to visit is during the warmer summer months which are between June and September. The most sunshine traditionally occurs in the months of May and June and the warmest months are July and August. Rain occurs throughout the year so it’s advisable to always have your rain jacket or umbrella with you. January and February are usually the coldest months of the year and considered to be the low tourist season.
