Activities and Sites near Abruzzo Villas

Abruzzo has arguably one of the richest deposits of natural and cultural attractions in Italy. Almost a third of the region is protected national park land. It is one of the few regions where you can see bears, wolves and chamois. Nature walks, hiking and climbing are popular activities among visitors. There are routes that can accommodate novices as well as more challenging alpine routes.

The Appenines are the tall glacial mountains that separate Abruzzo from Rome and western Italy. The region has good quality snowfalls each winter and hosts 21 different ski areas. Some areas are almost comparable in height to that of the Alps. Cross country skiing is popular, especially on the elevated plain of Campo Imperatore.

L’Aquila is the region’s largest city and most well known for its medieval architecture. Its most famous landmarks include a 16th-century castle and the fountain with 99 spouts. The fountain represents the 99 villages that united to form the city. There are several beautiful old churches in L’Aquila. Perhaps the most striking is the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio which has an impressive gothic interior.

Sulmona is a town famous for its sugared almonds which are known as confetti. Two churches worth visiting to view their architecture are the 13th-century San Francesco delle Scarpe and the 11th-century cathedral of San Panfilo.

Pescara has several miles of beachfront promenade and sandy beaches suitable for swimming and suntanning. From there, you can take a drive up the coast and enjoy the magnificent coastal scenery.

Travelling to and Around Abruzzo

Abruzzo has its own international airport, located just outside of Pescara. Low-cost European airlines have daily scheduled flights that arrive and depart from here. As an alternative, you can route via Rome and rent a car to drive to Abruzzo. Once in the region, it is best to have your own car to get around in. There are three main roadways that connect Abruzzo with other parts of Italy. All are toll roads and information on the toll fees can be obtained from the car rental companies when you collect the car.

The rail system is not known for its reliability and bus schedules between the towns do not operate that frequently. Driving through the countryside of Abruzzo, be aware of livestock that may meander across the road.
