The town of Stilo is known for its beautiful architecture. Its two most famous landmarks are the Cattolica which is a magnificent Byzantine church and the Norman castle. The town is also the home of Tomaso Campanella.

Calabria's oldest and largest city is located on the narrow strait between Italy's mainland and Sicily. Reggio Calabria's 3,000-year-old history is reflected in the many art nouveaux buildings, beautiful botanical gardens and historic places of interest. The National Museum of Magna Greca houses the famous Riace Bronzes. These tall Greek bronze statues date back to 460 to 430 BC.

On the Tyrrhenian Sea coastline is the town of Tropea which is most well known for producing sweet red onions. It is also home to the Santa Maria dell'Isola sanctuary. This magnificent ancient building is set high up on the cliff, overlooking two beautiful beaches which are accessible only by a long and winding staircase.

To view both the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea, you must visit the area of Catanzaro which is located in the middle of Italy's narrowest point. Walk along the promenade on the Ionian coastline or visit the archeological park where ancient civilizations are studied. There is also the impressive Viaduct Morandi-Bisantic, a massive one-arched bridge. Nearby are the ruins of the Le Castella, a castle shrouded in mystery and legend. Believed to once have been a love nest to a Greek goddess, it was occupied through the ages by both the Greeks and the Arabs.

If you enjoy hiking then visit the Pollino National Park, the La Scilia and Aspromonte mountain regions. The tall peaks are covered with dense pine forests and dotted with the occasional lake. In general, only the lower slopes have been cultivated and the upper slopes are covered by natural vegetation. Getting to Calabria Lodging

Calabria is served by two national highways that run along the coastline. On the inland route, the A3 motorway links Reggio di Calabria with Salemo. The main roads are generally busy with the traffic, only calming as you get into the smaller seaside villages. There are two main airports providing access into Calabria. One is located in Reggio di Calabria and the other in Lamezia Terme.
