  • great place!

"Silvio was incredibly helpful and friendly and made sure we knew everything we needed to know before we arrived, he even arranged to have us picked up from the airport! The apartment is in a great location, the road outside is quite busy but you can't really hear it with the balcony window closed. It's close to everything, the Vatican is a few minutes walk away and we walked everywhere all week. I'd highly recommend staying here, Silvio's apartment is an excellent base to explore Rome from!"

  • Perfect early autumn retreat

"My wife and I recently stayed in the one-bed house at Borghetta Calchinaia and enjoyed 10 days of wonderful early-October sunshine, combined with all the benefits of being slightly out of season: easy accss to the best retaurants (of which there are many close by) and to view the beautiful hill-top towns with their stupendous art; plus the over-abundance of fresh seasonal foods and wines. The property has been lovingly restored, to the highest modern standards and sits in a beautiful garden with stunning views over the lake and surrounding hills."

Le Marche Travel Tips

Enjoy a Restful Italian Vacation at The Marches Vacation Rentals

Those looking for the real Italy without the crowds should head for Le Marche (pronounced Lay Markay) on the eastern coast of central Italy. Enjoying the beautiful coastline of the Adriatic Sea against a stunning backdrop of the Appenine Mountains, the area offers beaches, festivals, history, breathtaking scenery, sunshine, clean air, art, architecture and more. The medieval hill towns await discovery as you explore the area from your The Marches accommodation.

The Weather in Italy’s Marches

The Marches enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers, a pleasant spring and autumn, and a cool winter with regular rainfall. The refreshing sea breeze keeps summer temperatures manageable along the coast and the mountains have cooler temperatures due to the elevation. Expect winter highs to be 15 C (59 F) and summers to reach 27 C (81 F).

Things to Do Around The Marches Villas

Exploring the area around The Marches vacation rentals is a pleasure, with its coastal plains and rolling hills of olive trees nearby. The area has many fortified towns dating back over 1,000 years. The area, like its neighbors Tuscany and Umbria, grows grapes and produces decent wines in the many local wineries. For a more relaxed vacation, the area also has some good sandy beaches including those at Grottammare, San Bernadetto el Tronto and Pesaro, with its ancient fishing port all close to your The Marches accommodation.

The area is known for its open-air opera season and a visit to the Teatro della Muse in Ancona will reward visitors with superb performances of opera, classical and jazz music.

Getting to The Marches Vacation Rentals

The Marches are served by the Bologna Airport, a two- to three-hour drive away, and Rome Airport, a little further afield from most The Marches vacation rentals. Most cities in Italy are linked by rail but flights are generally faster and cheaper. Driving to The Matches is a good option, especially if you enjoy driving and want to take back wine and olive oil as souvenirs.

Places to Visit from Your The Marches Accommodation

The Appenine Mountains provide spectacular sightseeing and wonderful opportunities for hill walking and caving in the limestone caverns. The highest point is Monte Vettore which stands at 2,476 meters (8,123 feet). The Frasassi Caves are a huge complex and the surrounding national park is home to massive eagle owls, golden eagles and peregrine falcons. For the best views along the coastline, visit Monte Conero peninsula with its rare flowers, birds and panoramic views.

San Leo, the imposing coastal fortress, has been a local attraction for centuries. Those wanting to visit the capital city will find Rome is just a three-hour drive from The Marches and offers a host of gardens, palazzos and ancient monuments which are sure to make you want to return for a longer visit.

Food and Drink near The Marches

A visit to any region of Italy will inevitably focus on the local food and wine, and The Marches is no exception. While the local osteria may serve just one dish of the day, a ristorante will generally have a written menu but all are guaranteed to serve superb cuisine. The signature dish is porchetta, roast suckling pig, which may be served whole or sliced and enjoyed in fresh bread rolls. Being close to the sea, Brodetto or fish broth is a delicacy to be savored. Truffles, rabbit and lamb also feature high on the menu, accompanied by the local pasta, papardelle alla papara, which is a flat pasta served with a tasty duck sauce.

The Marches produces a crisp white Verdicchio wine which is an excellent accompaniment to seafood dishes or you can try the red Rosso Conero wine.
