A "Refuge" from the big city
"Previous reviewers have already said all there is to know about the B&B and Bill and John, and I agree that it was the single best B&B stay I've had, ever. I'll instead talk about the location of Il Refugio for travelers who are wondering if they want to be out in "the sticks" instead of a major Italian city. I am not the biggest fan of large cities so on this, our first trip to Italy, we skipped Rome, spent 3 nights in Florence, and 4 nights at Il Rifugio. I wish now that we'd stayed longer in the countryside at Il Refugio. It was so quiet, relaxing, and beautiful, yet also an easy drive to all the best parts of Tuscany like Cinque Terra, Lucca, Portovenere, Pisa, and Florence. All of the food we ate in the small trattorias in the country was AMAZING. The immersion into "real" Italian life was much easier because we were forced to drive ourselves around, interact more with locals, and go to smaller, family owned restaurants and businesses. In Pisa and Florence, we felt more like we couldn't escape the tourist traps. I highly recommend staying with Bill and John and making Il Rifugio your home base to explore the wonders of Tuscany. A big thank-you to them for welcoming us into their home and beautiful gardens."

"Abbacca –la is set atop a beautiful, steep sided valley and is just 20 minutes out from Lucca. Views to the mountains from the house are truly stunning. The apartments are well equipped and very comfortable. Lella is a perfect host, eager to help but not at all intrusive. Having read all the previous reviews we were beginning to doubt whether it would live up to expectation, but it did! It was easy to explore nearby Lucca, Pisa, Florence and the coast. We loved it, our teenage girls loved it and my elderly in laws had a wonderful time. Lella cooked a delicious meal for them while the younger members of the family headed into Lucca for one of the Summer Festival Concerts. What a wonderful place to spend a week."

"We were delighted with the location of the apartment. Situated on the first floor, it has a lovely living room with windows looking out across the square and is furnished attractively. The flat was VERY clean and tidy. The 2 bedrooms are perfect, the beds are extremely comfortable. The bathroom and shower room were also well equipped. The kitchen was superb and we had lovely breakfast in the sunlight and lovely dinners even if there are masses of excellent restaurants and Trattorias in Lucca, so who needs to eat in anyway and if you do it can be transfored with candles. All in all the apartment was perfect for our stay Thank you to the owner!"

"Casa Bella is exquisite. The apartment is beautiful and wonderfully situated to explore Lucca – right inside the old walled city near one of the entrances, so you can park and leave your car there, since you will only need a car for trips outside Lucca. A stay at Casa Bella will also lend you the fleeting feeling of living in Tuscany, because it's beautifully cared for and designed with all amenities. The tiled floors, comfortable beds, magnificent view and fully-stocked kitchen made us feel at home. Nancy left a guide with great and thoughtful recommendations for fancy and non-fancy eating – around town and in the region. She also provided us with bikes, which are the best way to get around, apart from walking. We will definitely return."
