"We recently stayed at Casa Spello, located in the hilltop village of Spello in Umbria, near Assisi, for a few days after being in Rome for two weeks. I work for a local lifestyle magazine here in the Bay Area, and have stayed at many charming hotels - but this is different - and better.
Casa Spello worked its magic on us the minute we arrived. We took an easy two-hour train ride from the Termini Station in Rome, rolling along scenic terrain with charming hilltop towns dotting the countryside.
It is an easy walk into town from the train station at Spello. The caretaker, Nadia, was there to meet us upon arrival and insisted upon toting our suitcases along the charming cobblestone streets. We instantly felt "at home" in Spello. The people are so nice and friendly - very different vibe than in Rome.
Casa Spello occupies a prime corner lot in the town of Spello - with sweeping views of the Umbrian Valley. The unit was so well-thought out and cozy. Best news - had all modern conveniences without being intrusive. T.V., wi-fi, well-stocked kitchen - all the modern amenities encased in an amazing medieval home.
(NOTE: We were staying at first-rate accommodations in Rome, but, it had nothing on the shower in our unit at Casa Spello. It is a rare and beautiful thing to have a shower that strong in italy!)
After Nadia showed us all the conveniences of our apartment, we set out on foot to explore. There are a lot of little stores and restaurants, with breathtaking views at each turn. The town is very manageable to navigate, and has won prizes for having the most beautiful flowered pathways in Umbria.
We took an evening drive about 20 minutes away to the hilltop town of Collepino. The La Locanda bar is a MUST - and the local restaurant, Taverna San Silvestro, offered literally some of the best food we had ever tasted. Order the lamb and pasta with porcini mushrooms and truffles, and tell them you are guests of Gina Waldman at Casa Spello. Everyone seems to know and adore Gina! We were treated like family.
We had a SECOND dinner that evening in Spello at La Locanda del Postiglione at via Roma 5. Again - never tasted a truffle crepe so delicious in our lives. Hands down the winner of all dinners throughout Italy - and right there in Spello. Again,be sure to mention you are staying at Gina's home at Casa Spello. They will be thrilled.
The next couple days, we toured Assisi and Perugia - both just 30-40 minutes away from Spello. Both very quaint and pictures"

"Umbria is a beautiful country which made our legs very tired but relaxed our souls, eyes and thoughts. Tenuta di Casa Bruciata and „our“ apartment Colombaccio was of an uncommonly beauty. Because of the green surroundings, nature, birds, view, peace and friendly attitude of the owners in every moment we look forward to come again. They showed us how to prepere Umbria's specialties, we tested excellent wines and olive oil, we lighted the fire in the ancient fireplace every evening and enjoyed every moment. Those morning fogs, just bofore the sunrise, were unforgettable pictures of the untouched nature that was surrounding us. In addition, a lot of cultural places in vicinity make it easy to go for a lot of interesting and beautiful day trips. Thank you so much for this beautiful experience and see you soon."

"My friend and I recently completed a week at Podere Vigliano. Everything was wonderful, especially the pool during an especially hot week. We found Susan's house and excursion books to be very helpful and followed the suggestions for, three excursions, we also had Milena come to cook for us one night, which was spectacular and included a birthday cake, complete with candles, because I mentioned to Susan in an email that this trip was for both of our 60th birthdays. The house is well stocked and roomy, with lots of nooks and crannies for privacy. It would be wonderful for larger groups, although we luxuriated in all the space. The grounds are beautiful, and, even though the property is right next to the road to Moneleone d'Orvieto, provide a sense of serenity and quiet. We lived it and would return I a heartbeat!"
