  • How I Spent My Great Summer Vacation!

"Looking back I realized I had to chronicle one of the best summer vacations I’ve ever had. In July 2009 my wife and I put ourselves in the hands of Suzy and Bill Menard at Fattoria del Gelso, Cannara, Umbria Italy. What distinguished this vacation was the hands on warmth and guidance of Bill and Suzy and the entire staff. The updated farmhouse was wonderfully homey and afforded the privacy and comfort required for a restful vacation. The picturesque grounds are beautiful and clean. And after a day out and about, in and around the swimming pool we had a sweet early evening oasis to cool off and enjoy cocktails in. I traveled with my wife and another couple. Each day with the sun shining down on us we were treated to so much of Umbria that we had to plan for some down time. Suzy, Bill and staff helped us plan each day and addressed our needs as we went along, a custom designed on demand vacation. Days were filled with learning, relaxing and enjoying. There were trips to local wineries one of which we lunched at, tours of Assisi and Peruggia, which was also hosting the Umbria Jazz Fest, a private cooking class and evenings meals at the villa or at a nearby village restaurant featuring seasonal Umbrian fare. During our stay other guests included by chance, a prominent author, a news editor, an electronics engineer, and a CEO of a US Bio-Solutions firm. The evening dinners around the pool, anchored by the abundant flow of Umbrian wine were casual and carefree. The delicious nightly dining was not only a food lover jackpot but a wonderful social gathering featuring very interesting conversation among the guests. With discussion and opinions on politics, prose, business and the arts one could not help but feel reminiscent of European salons of the 18th century. As evening turned gently to night we watched the sun set gently over the horizon from our vantage nestled in the valley floor of the “breadbox of Italy” while gazing up at the lit up hillside of Assisi. Importantly we never felt that Suzy and Bill were pushing tours as much as they were treating us as guests in their home. They shared years of knowledge to make sure our experiences were great for us. I suggest you too leverage that knowledge by sharing with them what is you want out of your vacation. They will be prepared, they will arrange everything and you will have a great time. I hope you find the time and means to enjoy this wonderfully hosted vacation spot for a great time."

  • Magnifico!

"Just a week returned from an eight night stay at Villa Buonanotte Barbanera and my family and I would love to get on the next flight and visit again. My wife and I, our 6 year old daughter and our 20 month old son, spent Pasqua (Easter) in Spello at Andrea’s beautiful villa. The villa is as spectacular in person as it is in the pictures – and the views are even better. The conversion/restoration of this 14th century church was done with care and an incredible attention to detail. It retains the old world feel but contains all of the modern conveniences you want. The décor is comfortable and stylish. Our daughter loved having her own space upstairs with its unique Moroccan inspired theme. The outdoor space is a treasure, made even more spectacular by the fact it is within the old city walls. You never tire of walking into the private garden from the street and seeing the tremendous views. The location of the villa provides the best of both worlds – a country feel/view but with in-town convenience. Andrea herself was a joy to work with during the planning process and a genuinely great person when we met her. She can organize all sorts of activities for you, restaurant recommendations, pantry stocking – pretty much anything. During our stay she said to me that she knows there are many nice villas for people to stay in, and so it was important for her to provide a service level that elevates a stay with her above other options. These are not hollow words, she clearly believes and acts on them. She is also clearly well known and respected in town as many local business/restaurant proprietors knew her and knew that we were staying with her. I also wanted to mention Sabrina, a young woman Andrea relies on occasionally when she cannot meet a guest for check in (which was the case for us). Sabrina was so nice, and so great with our kids, that we actually had her babysit (or “funsit” as my daughter said) for us half-way through our stay. We were a bit unsure how it would go as the kids didn’t know her. It couldn’t have gone any better, the kids had a great time with her, going out for gelato, going to a playground, and just hanging out at the villa. It went so well in fact that when we told our daughter we were going to have her come again later in the trip she jumped for joy. I would not hesitate to return to Buonanotte Barbanera or suggest it to others. It was an integral part of our fantastic vacation. If you’re going to Umbria give Andrea a call!"

  • The perfect escape to experience a taste of Italy.

"This friendly family run farm is a real find in the heart of Umbria, half an hour by car from Perugia. The owners have achieved the perfect balance of making you feel that you are completely independent but are also available to give you all the information that you need to enjoy the “real Italy .“ The standard of accommodation is excellent with everything provided and thought about, our apartment had both a dishwasher and a washing machine for our sole use .It was very clean and well presented. The luxury of having abundant tomatoes and vegetables picked from the farm and the opportunity for the children to pick your own was a great excitement. Delicious olive oil, wine and homemade produce was also available from for a few euros. The cooking activities had attracted us to Casa Rondini on the website and they were not a disappointment, in fact they were one of the highlights that the children are still talking about! There is plenty to visit in the surrounding areas from traditional Italian hill top villages, the historic towns of Assisi and Orvieto . On return a cool dip was always welcome in the refreshing pool. The children also enjoyed the waterfalls, water sports on Lago Trasimento and visiting the well-known chocolate factory (home of Baci). There is something for everyone."

  • A Taste of Heaven

"What does one say when you come across a physical space that embraces you, renews you and makes it oh so easy to live. Il Conventaccio is a most special and remarkable place to be. I cannot thank the owners sufficiently for the care and effort and vision they had in restoring this 12 century convent property from it ruinous state into the elegant and comfortable home that they have. From the minute you arrive you can only gasp at the beauty of the entire surroundings as you sense the peacefulness within the walls and throughout the land on which it sits. Five of us had ventured from the US for a two week respite and we found a taste of heaven. There is nothing in Conventaccio that was done without great thought and in the most exquisite of tastes. The area is charming and enchanting as one of the many hill towns with its own unique individual history and storied past. All that you read regarding the home's spaciousness and comfort is true but the words cannot capture the deep sense of place and peace it evokes as you spend time there. The mornings are simply wonderful as you awake to the dawn and the sun shows its face, the birds sing, and the neighboring bells begin their toll. You arise to see a stunningly beautiful Umbrian landscape from your window which is calling you to greet another beautiful day in Umbria. Simply breathtaking and the owners have many kind recommendations along with the gracious assistance of their caretaker which makes your stay at Conventaccio so very easy and one which will beckon you to return. WOW"
