Malta Island Travel Tips

Staying at Malta Island Vacation Rentals

The Maltese islands are located in the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 93 kilometers south of Sicily. Malta Island is the largest and most developed of the three. Gozo is largely rural and dominated by farmlands and fishing villages. Comino is mostly uninhabited. Most of the vacation rentals are located on Malta near Tigne and Sliema. These apartments provide easy access to the beachfront, shops and restaurants. If you want to catch a bus to other parts of the island, you should find one within easy walking distance of the apartments. The apartments are spacious and can generally accommodate between four and six adults. Some have modern kitchens with appliances that make holiday catering easy and convenient. Relax in comfortable living areas and hear the sounds of people gathering at nearby beachfront cafés.

Malta Island Travel Attractions

Because of its location in the Mediterranean, Malta has been the site of many wars and conflicts. The result is that the island is blend of many cultures, nationalities and traditions. The island has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of some of the ancient ruins found on the island. Possibly the most impressive are the 7,000-year-old megalithic temples. One temple known as Ggantija is reputed to be the oldest freestanding temple in the world. The underground catacombs at St. Paul’s and St. Agatha’s are well worth visiting. Fort Rinella is recorded as being home to the world’s largest cannon. There are also a number of significant World War II sites on the island. These include Mgarr war shelter, the British military buildings at Mtarfa, and the Armory and Maritime museum in Vittoriosa.

The museums on Malta are impressive. While there is a strong emphasis on history, the different museums each have a unique aspect to their exhibits. The Museum of Archeology has an interesting display of artifacts that date back to pre-historic times. If you visit the War Museum at Ft. Elmo on a Sunday, you can witness the military parade that takes place with locals dressed in period costumes. At Alarme and In Guardia, you can see historical reenactments which are highly entertaining. There also an interactive multimedia tour which brings to life the rich history of the island. The National Museum of Fine Arts showcases many superb artworks. For more contemporary works, you can visit the St. John’s Cavalier Art Center.

There are many activities available for those that want to enjoy the warm Mediterranean waters. Scuba diving, boating, sailing and swimming are all popular activities. You can rent Jet Skis from the marinas and head out for a fun-filled day on the sea.

Getting to Your Malta Island Accommodation

Malta has its own international airport which is located between the villages of Luga and Gudja on Malta Island. The airport is approximately 10 kilometers from Valletta. There is an efficient public bus transportation system on both Malta and Gozo which makes getting around the islands easy. On arrival though, you will probably prefer to get a taxi to go directly to your destination. Car rental is also readily available and relatively inexpensive. Scooters and bicycles are also available for rent and great ways to explore the islands.

Best Time of Year to Visit Malta Vacation Rentals

Malta has a generally warm climate which is characterized by many hours of sunshine, even in the cooler winter months. The summer months run from early May through October and are typically hot and dry. In the autumn, strong winds from North Africa, known as the Sirocco, increase the temperatures and humidity levels. The winter is relatively short and mild, and most of the rainfall occurs during this time. The most popular season to travel is during the summer months, even though it is hot. Sunbathers can be seen on the beaches well into October.
