The courthouse is an ornate palace that was built in 1924. Perhaps one of the most well-known buildings is the Monte Carlo Casino and Opera House. It was built in 1893 by Charles Garnier, the same architect that built the Paris Opera House. The Saint Devote Church is a small chapel in the center of the city. A more ornate building is the Monaco Cathedral which was built in 1875. Build almost entirely from white stone, it is an intricate Roman Byzantine design. It includes the royal crypt where past sovereigns such as Prince Rainier and Princess Grace have been laid to rest. Fort Antoine is an 18th-century fortress that was destroyed in 1944. It was partially rebuilt in 1953 and is now an open-air theater. Some of the museums include maritime exhibits as well as a royal vintage car collection. Royal archives and family history can be seen at the Napoleonic Museum.

Traveling to Monaco

Monaco is the world's second smallest independent principality after the Vatican City. It covers an area of just 1.6 square kilometers and is located on the French Mediterranean Coast just a short distance from the Italian border. The nearest major international airport is the Nice Cote d' Azur International Airport in France which is just a short drive from Monaco. The airport host flights from more than 86 different international destinations. If traveling from North America, you may first need to route via one of the other major European travel hubs such as Paris or Milan. Many visitors to Monaco will get a helicopter transfer from Nice's airport. In fact, Monoco has one of the most impressive heliports in Europe. Monte Carlo also has an expansive marina where many luxury yachts and cruisers are moored. Many travelers stop in at Monaco as part of a Mediterranean cruise.
