  • Wonderfully Warm Holiday Apartment

"A lovely apartment in a lovely city. With the corner view of the canal, and its central location we felt as part of Amsterdam and not as visitors. The cafe below the apartment (Buffet van Odette) with fine dining and pastries, was a perfect fit with the apartment. We could not have planned a better location. Central to museums, canal boats, trams, and Amsterdam life, the location is perfect for exploring Amsterdam."

  • Calm and Charm

"My wife and I greatly enjoyed the peace, calm and charm of this house, its substantial garden and its surroundings for our short stay on the outskirts of Edam in June 2014. The photos and description were quite accurate. As a measure of success we rapidly found ourselves referring to "going home" after excursions rather than "back to the house". Having arrived on a Sunday evening when no shops were open, our host was kind enough to supply coffee and milk for the following morning (though we couldn't find any sugar!). Future guests may find it useful to know that there is a large Deen supermarket at William Pontstraat 82 in Edam (about 6 mins away by car/bike) open from 08:00 to 21:00 Mon-Sat. Edam itself is a lovely small town, easily navigable on foot (4 mins away by car/bike or a 20 min walk). In particular there are some very attractive views across the canal alongside Schepenmakersdijk. If you have a car or are happy to use public transport, it's very easy to get to Amsterdam e.g. for the (inevitable?) visit to the Rijksmuseum. The underground car park beneath Museumplein (adjacent to the Rijksmuseum) had plenty of spaces when we went midweek. Tip: if you have a smartphone or tablet, consider downloading the free RIJK app for a set of top notch interactive guides to the Rijksmuseum; but if not, then the museum can supply (similar?) material on a hired iPod ("multimedia tour"). Also, if you are approaching Edam from the South and you have a wide vehicle (or its wing mirrors do not retract) take care not to allow your SatNav to direct you along Oosterkade turning off Burgemeester Versteeghsingel or Keetzijde, the entry to and exit from the first bridge really ARE narrow. In conclusion, if you want a spacious and tranquil rural base from which to explore Noord-Holland yet one that is only 20 mins away from Amsterdam, look no further. Finally, an extra thank you to our host, Charlotte, for the availability of the bikes (and for arranging good weather so we could use them!)"

  • Great location, clean and all the conveniences!

"For the past 12 years, we have travelled every year and have rented a house in some part of Europe. Country & Lake is by far the BEST rental we have stayed in. There is no doubt that we will be back next year.My husband and I spent the first week in April in the 3-level barn-house. The views are stunning. The view from the living room area (2nd floor) overlooks the wetlands (green-green fields), which we found to be incredibly peaceful and relaxing to watch. We loved to see the ducks, geese and other interesting birds flying around, feeding (and nesting, apparently) in the field. The farmer next door has horses, a pony and sheep, which hang-out in right in front of the huge picturesque windows. There were lambs this time of the year and it was really entertaining to watch them run around (they reminded us of puppies; following one another, tearing back-and-forth). The view from the master bedroom on the 3rd floor overlooked the Lake, which offered a whole different perspective and reminded us of how inventive the Dutch have been, managing the sea! The lower level offers a sauna and a really wonderful spa-type room, which I really enjoyed sitting in late afternoon, when the sun streamed in. In addition to the gorgeous views, we enjoyed watching the children bicycling to school every morning and the enthusiastic cyclists who used the country road, also visible from the 2nd floor living room area. The house has ALL the conveniences and was spectacularly clean and comfortable. Onny and Saskia are warm hosts (and Fred, their cat), always ready to help. The area is charming and there is a lot to explore; the local stores, supermarkets, bakeries and general feel is very rural. Oh, and the very narrow bridges can prove quite challenging by car (it helps to have mirrors that retract), although there were other routes to avoid the village bridges. While the property is secluded (which we look for in a property), it was easy to be in the throng of community and navigate the small towns. It was very easy to get into Amsterdam by car (although I understand that transportation by bus is also very easy to manage). After our week at Country & Lake, we boarded a 10 day Viking River Cruise with stops in The Netherlands and Belgium. The cruise was truly wonderful, but my husband and I both agree: if we were to do it over, we would have preferred to spend our 2 and 1/2 week vacation staying-put, in Warden at THIS property. Thanks, Saskia and Onny!"
