  • What a fantastic villa!

"We stayed at the villa Peixe Rei for number of days together with two close Portuguese friends. We cannot speak highly enough of the villa. It is very spacious, comfortable, extremely clean, and had everything we could possibly have needed including an excellent BBQ area and a nicely located hammock where one could take a lazy summer nap. The views of the surrounding village of Quelfes and of the orange orchards from the balcony and from the pool area make the villa very exceptional and an excellent choice. The villa is very close to Olhao (the market there is an excellent place for fresh fish, meat, and vegetables) and to Spain – Ayamonte, which is a town and municipality located in the province of Huelva. There we had the best Paella so far! It was indeed a stay that we will not forget and certainly we will return back on our first opportunity. Our two daughters really loved the place and the pool. The cats and the friendly dogs provided that extra excitement which made the stay a relaxing holiday and a memorable one. The hospitality provided by the hosts Martin and Serilia, Maria and Luis certainly exceeded our expectations. They were very generous in providing us with a constant supply of freshly picked figs, tangerines, and oranges from their oranges groves situated next to the villa. We really enjoyed our stay and would strongly recommend the villa."

  • Great getaway in Alfama

"We stayed here for five nights in May with another couple and it was a great apartment to rent. Especially during the Champions soccer final - away from the crowds at the end of the day. The son of the owner picked us up at the airport - which was very helpful. The apartment came with wine, beer, water, fruit and honey which was a pleasant surprise. You just mark down what you eat and drink and leave cash at the end of your stay. Delicious honey! The washing machine was great! The owners leave a manual about the area with restaurant and food shopping recommendations. On the first night we went across the street for Fado and dinner - such a great experience. To get around, no need to rely on Tram 28, just walk to the right when leaving the apartment and head down the hill to the Apolonia station and take the metro anywhere. Get a pass for the number of days you are in town. The pass includes the tram and all buses too. The owners were great, dealt with a clogged shower drain quickly. If you have mobility issues, you may struggle with the Alfama area, and the stairs to the apartment, but otherwise a great deal for a lovely apartment. So nice to have a little terrace too."

Algarve Region Travel Tips

Best Season to Visit Algarve Vacation Rentals

The Algarve is known as Portugal’s sunshine coast. The warm weather and long days make it one of Europe’s top summer destinations. The main attraction is the beaches where holiday makers spend their days lazing about and working on their tans, as well as playing beach volleyball and racquetball or swimming. The peak season runs from early June to late August and during this time, the beaches and attractions can get quite crowded. Those wanting to avoid the crowds should consider traveling before the summer rush in May, or in late August and early September. The warm weather tends to hold until October. Towards the end of the month, the winter rains start to set in. The winter temperatures, while cold, are still relatively mild compared to northern Europe. In general, the Algarve is thought of as having a mild year-round climate. If your interests are more historical and cultural, you might consider traveling in spring or autumn. Many of the museums are open throughout the year.

Getting to Algarve Holiday Rentals

The primary access airport for the Algarve region is located in the city of Faro. The airport has an international designation and hosts flights on many of Europe’s national carriers. There are regular daily flights from London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich and Lisbon. Most often, travelers from North America will fly into Lisbon and then get a domestic connection on to Faro. Alternatively, you can also look at flights into any of the other European hubs that has regular daily flights into Faro.

One of the most efficient ways to travel around Portugal is by train. In fact, many people recommend taking the train between Lisbon and Faro as it’s far cheaper and you also get to enjoy some of Portugal’s scenery. There is an extensive bus transportation system throughout the Algarve. The buses are clean, cheap and efficiently run. The buses are well marked so you can see their destinations. During the summer season, they run regularly, providing easy access to the many towns and fishing villages along the coast. If you prefer to have a level of independence, you may consider hiring a car. There are a number of reputable rental agencies located in Faro.

Top Algarve Travel Attractions

The Algarve has two major attractions that make it one of Europe’s most popular summer tourist destinations, namely great golfing and the beaches. The Algarve has more than 20 championship 18-hole golf courses. Many have been designed by famous golfers who have each placed their distinctive mark on their individual courses. Enthusiastic golfers often design specific golfing tours where they can visit a great number of the courses and enjoy a round at each. For the rest of the visitors, the beaches are possibly the greatest attraction and much of the tourist activity revolves around them.

There are numerous towns and fishing villages dotted along the coast. Each has a collection of historical buildings and some beautiful churches. Food is a celebration in the Algarve and dining out or shopping for fresh produce is an experience in itself. Many of the local dishes are flavored with the traditional Portuguese Peri Peri which is a spicy chilli sauce. Seafood dishes are a speciality and you can enjoy the catch of the day at many of the seaside restaurants.
