  • What a fantastic villa!

"We stayed at the villa Peixe Rei for number of days together with two close Portuguese friends. We cannot speak highly enough of the villa. It is very spacious, comfortable, extremely clean, and had everything we could possibly have needed including an excellent BBQ area and a nicely located hammock where one could take a lazy summer nap. The views of the surrounding village of Quelfes and of the orange orchards from the balcony and from the pool area make the villa very exceptional and an excellent choice. The villa is very close to Olhao (the market there is an excellent place for fresh fish, meat, and vegetables) and to Spain – Ayamonte, which is a town and municipality located in the province of Huelva. There we had the best Paella so far! It was indeed a stay that we will not forget and certainly we will return back on our first opportunity. Our two daughters really loved the place and the pool. The cats and the friendly dogs provided that extra excitement which made the stay a relaxing holiday and a memorable one. The hospitality provided by the hosts Martin and Serilia, Maria and Luis certainly exceeded our expectations. They were very generous in providing us with a constant supply of freshly picked figs, tangerines, and oranges from their oranges groves situated next to the villa. We really enjoyed our stay and would strongly recommend the villa."

Azores Travel Tips

Getting to the Azores Vacation Rentals

The Azores are a group of islands belonging to Portugal. They are located in the Atlantic Ocean, northwest of the island of Madeira. To get there, you most often need to route via Lisbon on mainland Portugal, although there are some international airlines that offer direct flights from the U.S. and Canada. There are four main airports on the islands of Sao Miguel, Terceira, Faial, and Pico. Most international flights arrive and depart from Sao Miguel and Terceira, while the other two airports primarily serve regional carriers transporting passengers to mainland Portugal only. Once in the Azores, a regional airline provides flights between the main islands. You can also make use of the ferry links between the islands. On the islands, buses and taxis provide public transport for visitors. Car rental is also available for those that prefer to explore independently.

Azores Travel Attractions

The Azores are a picturesque group of islands with a wealth of outdoor attractions. On Sao Miguel and Pico, you can join up with a guided bird watching tour. These run on a daily basis throughout the summer season and are a great way to view the islands' birdlife. Whale watching is another popular attraction. The region is frequented by sperm whale during the summer months and tours run between June and September. Tour operators offer departures from Sao Miguel, Pico and Faial Islands. These tours are very popular and it’s advisable to secure your booking in advance. You can also swim with dolphins off the coast of Sao Miguel. The common Atlantic bottlenose, striped, Risso, and Atlantic spotted dolphins all frequent the waters of the Azores.

Sailing, boat charters and fishing are popular tourist activities in the Azores. Charters can be booked through the local tourist information offices or at the island marinas. This is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon. Big game fishing is best off the islands of Sao Miguel and Faial.

On the islands, you can enjoy some overland exploration on a Jeep safari. If you want a more energetic excursion, you can go hiking on Pico Island and explore its volcanic regions. Parts of the island have been designated as a World Heritage Site, providing protection for its endemic fauna and flora. For those with a geological interest, you can visit the volcano on San Miguel and learn about its origins.

There are three top quality 18-hole golf courses in the Azores. Two are located on the island of Sao Miguel and the third is on Terceira Island. Enjoy a challenging round of golf amid spectacular island scenery.

The Azores are well known for their unique and colorful handcrafts. Spend a day out browsing the markets and stores to seek out some souvenirs to take home. Most popular are the Logoa pottery items and the intricately woven lace and embroidered handcrafts.

Best Time of Year to Visit Azores Holiday Rentals

The Azores Islands enjoy a temperate maritime climate with little season variations. Each island has a unique micro-climate, produced by its terrain and individual location. Owing to its links to Portugal, the peak travel season is during the northern hemisphere's summer months. From June to October, many Europeans flock to the Azores to enjoy the warm climate and summer sunshine. Sporadic rain showers are common and it’s always advisable to take along your rain jacket when heading out for the day. The rain showers generally do not last long and are usually followed by clear sunshine. In general, you can get away with lightweight clothing all year-round with possibly a warmer jacket in the cooler winter months and for the evenings.
