Scotland Travel Tips

Be Enchanted by Scotland's Beauty

Scotland's dramatic and seemingly ever-changing landscapes never fails to enchant visitors. The age-old cities embody the rich Scottish culture. The gentle rolling hills give rise to dramatic mountain peaks in the highlands. The rugged coastline is often shrouded in mist, making it simply magical. The nine different regions have many diverse attractions but some things they have in common are warm Scottish hospitality and stunning landscapes. Many people travel to Scotland cottages to experience the culture and beautiful landscapes. What they often discover is that there is so much to see and do, they end up wishing they could extend their stay a little longer.

Getting to and Around Scotland

Traveling from the U.S., you will arrive at the international airports in either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Most often, you will usually have to route via one of the major European hubs such as London, Amsterdam or Paris. Once in the cities, it's easy enough to get around. The rail and road network is extensive and the public transport system pretty reliable. One of the best and most affordable ways to tour Scotland is using a rail or bus pass. Many Scotland vacation rentals are located in the historic city of Edinburgh which means that public transport can take you to see the vast majority of sites. If you've selected a more remote vacation home along the coast or in the highlands, you may need to hire a car and drive a portion of the way. Remember that in Scotland they drive on the left side of the road and that most rental vehicles are manual transmissions. If you want an automatic car, you usually have to pay a premium.

Scotland Travel is a Photographer's Dream

Characteristic of Scotland, especially in the summertime, are the vibrant colors reflected in the landscapes. Clear blue lakes are tucked between rolling hills dotted with wildflowers, and occasionally a majestic castle juts out against the horizon. The seasonal moods can be reflected in the contrasting light. On some of the backroads, as you capture the moment, you may get the sense that you have traveled back in time. As you tour historic and cultural sites, you'll find the people as fascinating as the rest of the country. There's always an interesting tale to tell and some fine whiskey to warm the bones. The annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of many events on the Scottish cultural calendar. The brightly colored kilts and marching bands are an incredible sight and the event is well worth attending.

Tourist Attractions in Scotland

When visiting Scotland, it's best to decide which area or interest you are going to focus on. The tourism authority is well organized and there are several themed routes that you can follow. Choose from beautiful castles and lochs, Scotland's historical sites, a world-famous whiskey route, magical isles and peninsulas, poets and pilgrims, golf circuits, national parks and a range of outdoor recreational activities.

For the active traveler, Scotland has some of the best mountain biking routes. Long and winding, they climb through valleys and forests with sections of thrilling single track and amazing country views. For a number of years, the mountain biking world cup has been held in Scotland, reflecting the quality of the trails. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy some whitewater fun on the rivers or a more relaxing canoe excursion on the many lochs. There are hundreds of hiking routes that can be enjoyed in the summer. In winter, the snow-covered peaks provide excellent skiing and snowboarding trails.
