Canary Islands Travel Tips

Best Time of Year to Travel to Canary Island Vacation Rentals

Located just outside of the tropics off the coast of northwest Africa, the Canary Islands enjoy a warm climate. Even when the European and North American winter is at its coldest, the Canary Islands are enjoying warm sunny skies. The islands boast of having 365 days of sunshine which makes it an ideal year-round destination. Summers are hot and the winters are very mild by European standards. You can still wear summer clothing during the day, although a light jacket may be required for the evenings.

Getting to Your Canary Island Accommodation

The two primary international airports are located on Grand Canaria and Tenerife. On Tenerife, the south airport receives most long haul international carriers while the north airport receives international and regional European airlines. Lanzarote is a popular European vacation destination and a number of European carriers fly directly into Lanzarote Airport. From Gran Canaria or Tenerife, there are domestic flights that connect to the other smaller islands. There are also ferries that operate between the islands and provide an alternative way of arriving at your vacation destination. The ferries also offer a more affordable alternative if you’d like to do a bit of island hopping during your stay.

Things to See and Do near Canary island Villas

The volcanic activity on the Canary Islands has resulted in diverse and contrasting landscapes both above and below sea level. The diving is reputed to be of a world-class standard. Snorkeling excursions can be arranged with one of the local charter companies. The calm waters and persistent sunshine provides perfect conditions for cruising and boating activities. You can join a group departure or arrange your own private charter aboard a luxury yacht. If you enjoy big game fishing, a local company will know the best place to take you to hook your prize. If you’d like to explore the island coastlines then a great option is to hire sea kayaks and paddle your way around. Take along your snorkeling gear and a light lunch to enjoy on a remote beach.

A great way to explore the island landscapes is to follow the many hiking trails. Traverse diverse terrains and see up close the effect that the volcanic eruptions have had on the islands. For the more adventurous, you can explore the underground caves and volcanic grottos. The beaches range in color from golden sands to black volcanic sand. Forests are made up of the indigenous canary pine and support a wide range of birdlife. There are more than 33 protected areas on the islands, ensuring that the natural habitat of the Canary Island’s wildlife remains untouched by development.

Travelers to the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are popular with European families as a vacation destination all year-round. Many travel in December and January to get away from the cold continental weather and enjoy some sunshine. There is a wide range of activities available on the various islands. You can almost be assured that there is some kind of activitity to capture the interest of every kind of traveler. Those that like the busy resort vibe will probably prefer to stay on Tenerife, Lanzerote or Grand Canaria. These islands are well developed and have a broad range of entertainment facilities and amusement parks. On the other hand, if your preference is a quieter, more nature oriented vacation then consider some of the smaller islands like El Heirro or Gomero. Scuba divers rank the diving as some of the best in the world. Surfers come to ride the ways and beach lovers adorn the beach coves and soak up the sun.
