The winter months are the second busiest time of the year to visit. Many people come to experience Lapland's winter wonderland and all that it entails. There are endless snow sports and many Christmas festivities that take place in December.
Sweden Travel Attractions and Activities
If you are traveling in the snowy winter months, it is sure to be an unforgettable experience. The countryside becomes a winter wonderland and the many towns are aglow with traditional lanterns that line the streets. There are many excellent ski resorts that offer downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross country skiing. The slopes cater to all levels of skiing ability. Other snow activities include snowmobiling, dog sledding and snowshoeing. For the more adventurous, there is ice climbing or heli-skiing. A favorite pastime at the end of the day is to relax your aching muscles in a steaming sauna. If you really want to follow local traditions, you can dive into the snow or an icy pool to feel invigorated and get the blood flowing again.
In the summertime, there are many outdoor activities available. The waters off the Swedish coast hold a wealth of treasures. For those willing to brave the chilly waters, there are many wrecks that provide excellent dive sites. If you enjoy paddling, you can explore Sweden's many rivers and island archipelagoes. Guided excursions can be arranged through local operators. Other activities include fishing and horseback riding through the countryside. Golfing enthusiasts can enjoy a round on one of the many excellent championship 18-hole golf courses in Sweden. In total, the country has more than 300 golf courses.
Getting to Sweden
Sweden is located in the far northern part of Europe and one of the Scandinavian countries. It is well connected to Europe by road rail and air, and there are frequent flights to North America and other continents. The major airport is in Stockholm which is the country's largest city and capital. To get to Stockholm, there are direct flights from most major European cities such as London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Munich. There are also transatlantic flights from New York City, Chicago, Seattle and Washington DC. Sometimes these flights route via Copenhagen in neighboring Denmark. In the far southern part of Sweden at the city of Malmo, there is a 10-mile bridge which connects to Copenhagen in Denmark. This is the main road and rail access point into the country. There are also numerous ferries that operate between Sweden and its Scandinavian neighbors.
