Loreto International Airport receives regular commercial flights from North America. Most of these flights route via Los Angeles, Phoenix, or Las Vegas. Regional airlines have connections from Mexico and other South American countries. Once in Loreto, you can hire a car to get to your vacation home or make use of the local taxi service. Many visitors from southern California prefer to drive down to Loreto. The city is located approximately 750 miles south of the Mexican border from San Diego. There is a good quality highway; traveling at normal speed limits, the drive should take around 12 to 13 hours. It’s advisable to plan two days for traveling so you can stop and enjoy some of the sights along the way.

Loreto is located on the Baja California peninsula in Mexico just north of the tropics. The weather is characteristically warm all year-round with some rainfall occurring in the summer months. Because of this, there is generally a high level of humidity which sometimes make the daytime temperatures feel even hotter. Average summer temperatures are between 74 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The summer months are considered to run from June to October. The only weather caution for Loreto is that it falls within the Pacific hurricane belt. Tropical storms occur seasonally between June and December. The winter and autumn months tend to be windy and spring has a nice moderate climate.

Shopping is a wonderful experience in Loreto. Handmade crafts and art can be found at the markets and boutique shops. Choose from silver jewelry, blown glass, ceramics and wood carvings, ornate lamps stands and fine textiles. Feel free to bargain with the craftsmen and women as this is part of the local culture.

The many water-based adventures available include scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, deep sea fishing, and whale watching. Local charter companies have boats available for hire and are generally willing to accept private charter requests. Enjoy a morning of scuba diving followed by a leisurely lunch and cruise along the coastline. Alternatively, you can head out in the early morning with your rod in hand and try catching a big one on a game fishing charter.

For the adventurous type of explorer, there are numerous hiking and mountain biking trails in the region. Hire a bike and buy a map to explore independently or join a guided group departure. The region also has some unique cave paintings that can be viewed as part of a guided tour.

Culture enthusiasts can enjoy visiting the beautifully restored San Javier Mission which is located high up in the hills behind Loreto. There are several buildings in Loreto that are historical monuments. The Mission of Our Lady of Loreto is a monument that marks the start of the royal road. This route runs up the coast to Sonoma in the U.S. and describes the route of the Spanish Missions.
