  • A Grand Old Lady

"We may well have been grandees coming home. The two of us arrived mid January 2015 and were welcomed enthusiastically at the door by wonderful Josefina and her husband Tomas who live a few blocks away. The house could double as a set for a Donizetti opera; it’s deliciously old world. We can only add to the superlative reviews on the Casa de la Espiga web site. The walk to the central Jardin is only a few minutes; the grade modest. One quickly scouts out which side of the street has the smoothest sidewalk. The location on Calle Canal means that colourful nationalistic and religious processions come by the front door. They can be dramatic and lengthy and terrific photo opportunities. Fireworks in the air in the Jardin can be seen from the roof terraces. A small grocery store is a block away and a traditional market less than a kilometer. Restaurants abound in the neighbourhood; municipal buses are an adventure; taxis inexpensive and we found everyone honest and most friendly and hospitable. We always felt safe. Despite the number of English speaking ex-pats we found we needed some Spanish in doing our daily business. San Miguel has the feeling of old Mexico. The travel agent beside the Parroquia (Cuna de Allende) speaks English and efficiently set up a day trip by bus to Guanajuato. Next time we visit we’ll spend more time luxuriating in Espiga. We’ll sequester ourselves on the wonderful terraces and ask Josefina to teach us more about Mexican cuisine. Thanks to Timothy and Ann for ongoing help and advice. It’s such a beautiful house; we should have brought another couple with us to share in the pleasure."

  • In a word: Great!

"We are just finishing up a 6 month stay in Casa Heloc and it has been, in a word, Great! The house is comfy, very light and filled with interesting folk art. The management company has been promptly responsive when called upon for assistance. Lupe and Vicente (maid and gardener) have been smiling, trustworthy and hard-working. When friends have come by to visit and see the house, they say "Wow, what a great house!" Yes, it is. We will return to Casa Heloc and highly recommend it anyone looking for a charming house in a safe Mexican neighborhood with a great rooftop. Margies at sunset - It does not get any better."

  • charming rental and hostess

"We recently spent a week at Casita Mandu in San Miguel. The owner met us at the entrance of the property and shortly thereafter took us on a walk of the neighborhood so we could familiarize ourselves with the small shops and restaurants. The one level Casita itself was colorful and well lit by skylights. The queensize bed was firm and comfortable. (really it was) The bathroom had a small space heater to take off the morning chill and the bedroom had a ceiling fan. We were never too warm or too hot. The kitchen had a stove/oven, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and a large jug of filtered water. A semi-private patio was most pleasant for reading or cocktails. A hairdryer can be found underneath the bathroom sink. I enjoyed the comfort and decor of the casita. The owner certainly is not afraid of color! We found her to be very kind, helpful and accommodating...very approachable. My only complaint is that it's a bit noisy until about 11 PM and then starts up again about 7 AM. The casita is built closer to the street than the villa also on the property. (I am amazed at how much can be fitted into the Mexican lots. They look so plain from the street and then they are palatial once inside.) But that's SMA and we have encountered that with previous visits. A friendly word of advice: earplugs. More recommendations: Breakfast at El Pegaso near Correo and Media Naranja close to the casita. The Bibliotecca offers very interesting tours at a reasonable price."

  • Beautiful Home & Wonderful Cook!!!

"This multilevel (3) home is simply gorgeous; it features beautiful spaces throughout the house and two wonderful terraces. Cooking on the kitchen with with the terrace doors open and the amazing views (particularly at sunset) was beyond words. As soon as we arrived we felt at home and parting was very hard. Amalia is a treasure and a wonderful person to converse with. Her cooking was delicious and she was kind to ask at what time we would prefer breakfast served. This was very important to us as we are not morning people and the fact that she considered our schedule just made her even more awesome in our eyes. As a local, Amalia has great recommendations as where to find good and affordable restaurants! Even though the home is in the high part of a hill, the walk to the Centro wasn't so bad. For those that prefer to not walk, the taxi drivers were always on time to pick us up for a pretty inexpensive amount. Overall, we had a fantastic time at Casa Colina and we cannot wait to stay there again, hopefully in the summer to enjoy the swimming pool!"
