  • Wonderful

"This was our annual girls getaway-my sister myself and my girlfriend. From the beginning and all the way to the end of our trip Mona was more than helpful and timely with information and suggestions to make our stay a wonderful one. I highly recommend following her lead on things. We were there during the off season and it was very quiet during our stay. The home is spacious and it was so nice for each of us to have our own bedroom and bath. The views are great, plenty of seating outside ( I spent most of my time in the hammock) and as one prior reviewer said, it stays shady if that what you want-if not there is a spot for sunning as well. Olga is absolutely fantastic-make sure you have her prepare supper for you at least once and if you like shrimp ask for the garlic shrimp-unbeatable. The walk to the beach is easy and there are plenty of places to eat along the water. The trip into town is a little longer but well worth it. The first time we went into town we walked back, the second time we learned our lesson and took a taxi-for 2-3 dollars including a large tip and it was WELL worth it. I would also HIGHLY recommend hiring Jose Aldama as a tour guide-we also used him for airport transportation to and from the condo. He is VERY knowledgeable, speaks great English and has a great sense of humor. Were we to do it again, I would hire him to pick us up at the airport-he knows right where he is going-and stopped for us to grocery shop. I would hire him for the next day or second day of our stay for a tour-he does a great job-and it really gives you a better sense of your surroundings and the layout if you have never visited before and then I would just get a regular taxi for the return to the airport. He can provide any type of tour for you-he has a brand new AIR CONDITIONED (remember, it was low season-translation hot and humid) Suburban. He is an official tour guide for Mexico-evidently no small feat-and his professionalism shows. We ran across a great Panderia (bakery) just one street off the boardwalk-I can't remember the name of it but it has a small wooden sign hanging over the door and the bakery goods are displayed in the window. From the boardwalk turn into the alley that houses the "library" (as in some books in a stand) its just a wide alley, go to the next street and turn left and its the second or third little shop on the right. Awful description I know but a local can help. Mona is great, the condo is great, the staff is great, DO IT!"

  • Our New Favorite Place in Mexico

"We have a new favorite place in Mexico. My wife and I have been traveling in Mexican beach towns for over 20 years. From Akumal, Playa del Carmen, Sayulita, Barra de Navidad, Cabo & a few more. Prior to this trip I would have told you that Sayulita was the place. We've been there about ten times starting in 1994. But Zihua tops them. You have to like Mexico. That includes walking through some dusty streets with some rumbling trucks & the occasional stray mutt. But it also means the charm of Mexico. The smells of street side restaurants & the feel of warm breezes rustling the palm trees & great beaches. Zihua is a big enough town that spreads out behind Playa Principale. More than adequate shopping without the high prices of a Playa del Carmen and a great variety of restaurant choices. Yet, it's small enough that you can explore it all easily. Be sure to take a morning & visit the local mercado in the town. Indescribably fun! Playa la Madera, where this condo is located, is more of a locals beach. Not too many tourists and very welcoming. The three or four "restaurants" on the beach are friendly & cheap - with the exception of Bistro del Mar, a bit more high end but worth a visit. The condos location is perfect. A short walk to town or short hike over to Playa la Ropa. I think that people who stay at la Ropa tend to stay there because it is a longer walk/hike to town. Or a short taxi ride, but still... The condo itself is well acquainted. Although it's a two bedroom unit it would be best for a couple (upstairs suite) and kids (downstairs bedroom) as there is not a lot of private space once you're there. To go with another couple we would look into renting this place along with the place next-door as the two can be connected via a door that is locked otherwise. The condo is beautifully wide open with panoramic views of the bay of Zihuatanejo. The kitchen is small but adequate to prep small meals. Favorites: "Patio Mexica" cooking school; Rufo's for dinner (same spot, different managements); sunset cocktails at any of the places up on the hill leading to la Ropa; fish tacos at Playa las Gatas; the mercado in la centro; watching the schools of fish jump on Playa la Madera & watching the sea birds dive into the schools for dinner. Rick & Suzette were really accommodating and helpful with our planning. They have great recommendations for eating & shopping and exploring. Muchas gracias!"

  • Paradise Found!

"Spyglass sits high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific and a never-ending beach to the west.  It’s a world-class view with some of the most spectacular sunsets you’ll ever see.  That view and the crashing of the surf on the rocks below are present from almost everywhere on the property, and those images and sounds will stay with you long after you’ve left.  We rented in October with a group of 10 friends.  The villa is perfect for getting together for drinks in the bar, playing games in the sala or tv room, having meals together in the dining rooms, or for finding your own private spot for some quiet reading or whatever.  The bedrooms are spacious, comfortable, and nicely air-conditioned.  The two pools are clean and well-situated on the hillside overlooking the ocean.  The salt water pool, just above ocean level and fed by the ocean, is marvelous, with its own bar and two one-bedroom suites nearby for relaxing.  The staff is extraordinary: helpful, friendly, and efficient.  All you need to do is tell them what you need and expect, and it’s done.  We highly recommend Chef Alexandro, He’s a true professional, and he also makes the best margaritas and pina colatas we’ve ever tasted. Beaches are close by, to the north and south of Spyglass.  They are quiet and good for boogy boarding and body surfing.  Zihuateneo and Ixtapa are within an hour’s drive away.  Both places are touristy but fun.  The closest town to the villa is Petatlan, about 20 minutes to the north.  It is authentic Mexico with interesting shops and restaurants.  Fishing is available in a small town half an hour to the south.  Basic, but successful for us at least, as we caught 10 fish in an hour or so. This is an extraordinary property, clearly a personal project of Matthew, the owner, and his care, attention to detail and good taste are evident everywhere.  The house is beautifully constructed and furnished, perfectly situated to take full advantage of the views.  The hillside down to the ocean, with its steps, pools, bars, bathrooms, and bedrooms is just amazing and so much fun.  The grounds are kept beautifully, and the whole place is completely private and safe.  We feel extremely fortunate to have been afforded the opportunity to rent  such a remarkable place. • Great location! Wonderful Hosts!

"Host picked us up at airport and because condo is so centrally located, no need for a rental car. Also, their "starter package" was very welcoming, some wine, some beer & chips & guacamole-- Wow. We were in transition season, pretty steamy, but good news was we had the pool all to ourselves. Try the quail at "Casa Vieja" restaurant across the street!"
