  • Mexican Idyll

"My husband and sister and I stayed for January and February of 2015. It was so pleasant that I can't do it justice with a few words. The architecture of the house, the garden, and the plentiful artwork were enough to keep me happy for 2 months, reading and trying to paint. Photography is too easy there, there is so much life and color. My husband loves to cook, bike, and hike, and he had a great time, he even joined a hiking group out of Ajijic and went there twice a week. He found the kitchen very well equipped and with the help of the Mexican cookbooks there, had a lot of fun learning Mexican cooking. Sometimes we drove to neighboring towns, sometimes we took the bus, and often we walked down the hill to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables, or to have some birria (a delicious local specialty made of slow cooked goat). For us, it was a big plus that we were forced to study some Spanish because not everyone understood English. If it was deemed necessary, shopkeepers would dig up a young person who did speak english to translate for us, so we were never totally shut out. Our neighbors were uniformly gracious about our ignorance. We had read a negative review about barking dogs and mariachi music, but that was part of the adventure. We were prepared to be a bit out of our comfort zone and were very well rewarded. Inside the walls we were in a luxurious garden paradise, and directly outside the walls we were in a foreign, somewhat adventurous environment. I would recommend this place to those looking for a tranquil escape from stress with a beautiful climate, but not for those looking for surfing, beachcombing, or nightlife. I can see a family with small children having a great time, but teens might not be too enthused. The owner and employees all were pleasant, responsive and accomadating. We went on excursions to the round pyramids, the "Mexican Alps" (Mazamitla), the Pacific Coast (Manzanillo), an art crawl in Ajijic and a boat ride from Chapala. Our friends took a day trip to the artisans around Guadalajara. There is much to see and do if you leave the premises, but you may not want to. We were 100% pleased with our stay and eager to go back."

  • Ajijic Casita Stay

"The casita was quiet and tidy and close to restaurants, shopping. Plenty of kitchen stuff for doing your own cooking. A good place to relax and not do much of anything."

  • Another Wonderful Escape to Paradise

"This was our 5th year visiting Amy and Aivars in Ajijic, and our first two month vacation ever. It was also our first time driving from Ontario Canada to Ajijic. We had a wonderful time. Amy and Aivars are the perfect hosts, and are always ready to assist with anything that may be needed. When we needed to call home on a land-line phone, they made their personal phone available to us, which was so greatly appreciated. When the weather turned cold in March for three days, firewood was made available for the chiminea to keep us warm in the evenings as we sat outside on the covered patio. The off street parking for the car was also appreciated. Amy makes the best Paella in the village, which we enjoyed for dinner one evening with friends. Aivars is the author of some of the best homemade limoncello jam and beverages you will enjoy anywhere. Lucy and Mona, the two resident Golden Labs, visited with us for every meal which we ate on the covered patio. Should you choose this casita for your vacation, you will not be disappointed. The gardens and beautiful, and songbirds and humming birds are abundant. There are fiestas in the plaza, hiking in the mountains, tianguis market days in Chapala, Ajijic and Jocotopec, trips to Guadalajara and so much more to keep you involved. You can walk anywhere...it is very safe, or take local buses as very reasonable rates. We have booked again for yet another vacation next year."
