  • Amazing!

"We just stayed at Villa Gauguin for a week. I can't say enough how much we loved this villa. The house is absolutely immaculate, yet still comfortable and livable. The house is right on Yal Ku lagoon. The waters just in front of the house are fun for snorkeling. There is a fresh water river that flows right into the lagoon. This can cause some halocline and thermocline conditions in the water. This means that sometimes the water can appear "oily". This is just nature. If you dive down a foot or so, its super clear. The waters around the lagoon are pristine. We saw no trash, nothing but fish and coral. If you are into snorkeling, you will see parrot fish, sergeant majors, tangs, sea hares, sea slugs, an occasional eel, sting rays, eagle rays, turtles, etc. Snorkeling into the lagoon park is really fun. Lots of rock formations that are fun to swim around. I felt like an explorer. Getting into the water may require some planning. You need to be comfortable walking on a rough rocky surface. Bringing flip flops, rubber soled fin socks, or something like that will make it easier on your feet. There are 2 sets of stairs into the water. Its still not super easy to get in and out if you have mobility issues but with a little patience everyone in our group (ages 6-75) was able to get in and enjoy the waters. The pool is fantastic too. We spent most evenings in the pool just enjoying the view. Kids playing and adults relaxing. Francisco and Gladys keep the house so clean. They are very warm and friendly people. They both greeted us with a warm smile everyday. We had them cook for us 4 times. All I can say is wow! What a treat. The food was delicious. My favorite meal was the chili rellenos, but I can't complain about any of it. It was much lighter fare than I am used to in Mexican restaurants in Atlanta. Francisco and Gladys will keep to themselves to respect your privacy but we were grateful knowing they were there to keep the house in good shape and to keep things safe. The house has some great treats for little guys (or grown ups that forget they are grown up). There are iguanas out on the rocks. They will gladly share your fruit. You may also see tejons, pacas, turtles, and hermit crabs. Groceries in the area are also affordable. We went into the southern part of Playa for groceries. The stores can be a bit overwhelming but the prices were fine. To summarize, this place is AMAZING! We miss Villa Gauguin!"

  • Verbose About Our Vacation.

"We cannot say enough about our stay at Casa De Colores. We had a hard time leaving, as Huego may have needed reinforcements to physically remove us from the home. We swam in the pool everyday. We searched for crabs, coral and fish in the back of the house, which bumps up against the ocean. We enjoyed being pampered by Zulma and Gabbi. We snorkeled, explored, and ate our way though the entire week. If you stay here, make sure you have Zulma make you dinner. We recommend the chicken mole. My six year old told me he wanted this meal every night. He also told us Mexico was in his heart. You know your vacation was amazing when you look at each other on the last day and everyone has a tear in their eye. Thank you for the vacation of a lifetime. We hope to see you next year and the year after that and the year after that and the year after that and the year after that."

  • What an amazing property, location, and staff...best all around trip we've ever had!

"We highly recommend a stay in Akumal at Casa Kukulcan under the ownership of Mike McGetrick… one of the best vacations we’ve ever had! Mike’s design of Casa Kukulcan teases out Mayan architecture into a contemporary building including a pyramid front and an entry reflective of a Mayan purification tunnel. ‘Purified’ is how you feel as you walk in the entry that produces a gorgeous home of tile floors, dark wood accents, and a full two-story glass visual out the back at the lap pool and ocean beyond, framed in by palm trees. Our extended family of 12 ranged from 8 to 81 and the house easily accommodated needs for all. The large kitchen and professional surfaces allowed for food prep plus hanging out space and the two dining table options easily sat us all. Large air conditioned bedrooms with individual temperature controls, and comfortable beds and pillows, provided your choice of sleeping arrangements. My wife and I chose to sleep in the master suite with all doors and windows open to allow the warm breezes to pass over us. We fell asleep listening to the surf (bugs not a problem) and awoke to the songs of the melodious blackbird and kiskadee. The sunrise was also available from our master suite bed or from the chairs on the veranda …with a full cup of a Mexican mocha in hand, it was indeed perfection! Casa Kukulcan offers so much that if we did nothing else during our stay, we could fully enjoy the property, swim in the pool, or snorkel in the ocean beyond. We did that a number of days including our first full day so we could rest from travel and fully absorb our luxurious spot. We drove a few mornings into Akumal beach (just around the back of the Akumal Dive Shop at 8am) to snorkel with an assortment of sea turtles and stingrays as they grazed on the sea grass. We visited Mayan ruins as well, but a highlight of our stay was a private tour by the owner of the Santa Cruz Cenote. Carlos was very helpful and made the arrangements, but I would advise making them well in advance. The owner knows his cave and cenote well, speaks great English, and is clear about his desire to protect it while also sharing this remarkable little piece of earth with others. Thank you Mike and staff for providing the back-drop to a magical vacation! The Vickland and Wilson Families"

  • A little piece of paradise!

"La iguana 14 is an amazing condo! Deb, the owner, was organized and quick to respond to all questions. She has information on the surrounding area and all of the activities available. However, some of the prices have increased quite a bit from the info sheet she gave us. The house is well equipped with everything from kitchen appliances to books to movies and snorkel gear. The property staff were excellent and friendly. The grounds are well maintained and the iguanas stand guard! Snorkeling off the beach is great but water shoes are a must due to a rocky entrance and watch out for sea urchins! The main Akumal beach, the next bay over, is very crowded during the day so the earlier the better. We saw rays and turtles and barracuda. La buena vida restaurant is a quick 10 min walk and has a great happy hour and food with amazing atmosphere! It is easy to get to the Coba and Tulum ruins and the larger supermarkets are about 20 min away by car. Would definitely return and recommend this condo! Thanks for an awesome holiday!!"
