Luxury rental for discerning traveler
"If you want top of the line accommodations, look no further. Zen del Mar is a beautiful villa where the owners have paid personal attention to every detail. Our group of ten family and friends (ages 25-65) very much enjoyed our week.
Architecturally Zen del Mar is marvelous. The photos are accurate but pictures cannot convey the overall feeling. It is visually appealing everywhere you look. It also works well for a crowd with plenty of privacy and space to spread out. The bedroom suites are equal in amenities, which was nice for our group of adults. Because the setting is so attractive, we ended up spending more time at the villa than I expected. Planned excursions, especially in the evenings, fell by the wayside in favor of enjoying drinks by the pool, al fresco dinners, and late nights under the stars. It is quite dark at Zen del Mar because of lighting regulations that help the endangered turtles. Being there during turtle nesting season was an additional pleasure.
The food provided by staff and the chef was excellent. We used the chef three times and I highly recommend him. If you are the least bit adventurous, request Yucatan specialties. He provided seafood stuffed chili rellenos in a cream sauce that were as elegant as you’d find anywhere. We also had cochinita pibil (barbequed pulled pork) served in the traditional way, a superb seafood ceviche and fajitas which will please any crowd.
Things that I often find to be lacking at ‘luxury’ rentals are done right at Zen del Mar - towels were large and plentiful; good quality bedding and sheets; nice ceramic dishware; good plumbing. The daytime staff was pleasant and unobtrusive. They were extremely responsive to requests and phoned the managers for anything that they couldn’t take care of themselves.
This is an extraordinary place that we will definitely return to."

"Our stay at Casa Caribe was relaxing/peaceful; house has all the advertised features plus some. Christina is a doll, and took awesome care of us, including special requests & dinner (a 'must-do'...do early in the week for leftovers). She communicated with us in spite of our broken Spanish.
Didn't see/notice Luis; didn't see Rhett until part way thru week; didn't matter as house was ready and set for us. House has everything you need for the stay; nothing else we felt we needed. Owner and Christina were very responsive to requests (extra towels, etc.), and owner responded promptly to any questions. The pool was perfect for cool-off dips, especially since it was toasty warm during our stay (AC required for a comfy night's sleep). House is spacious, and we never felt crowded with 6 of us. Main floor bedrooms are good size (limited closet space in one) and each has attached bath (one with second door to hallway for convenience). The upstairs master is amazing, with a large tub, gorgeous deck and ocean views from bedroom and shower. Television area was comfy (used mainly for slide shows of pics taken; TV has extra HDMI connection) with TV being a bit small (~25 or 32 inch). The Wi-Fi worked fine during our stay.
Location is easy walk to La Buena Vida (restaurant/entry spot for snorkeling in half-moon bay [HMB]) and reasonable walk to Akumal & bay. Elderly folks (~80) with us, so needed car shuttle for those journeys with them.
We snorkeled at HMB, Yal-ku and with turtles at Akumal bay...all were great. Yal-ku charges $14 if you enter through land (free via long snorkel from HMB). Most literature at house regarding sites, etc. is a bit outdated - prices have gone up, and some places changed or gone. Update would be good for future visitors.
Ocean behind house was too rough to enter directly for snorkeling; not sure if ever calm enough due to the rocks (tempting tho). Not an issue with Buena Vida and HMB beach only a 5 minute walk away.
Location was excellent base for visits to Mayan Ruins and Cenotes. Definitely recommend rental car if sightseeing. Also recommend visit to Akumal Pueblo across highway for authentic Mexican flavor w/ variety of restaurants/food vendors for the adventurous. Grocery shop at Playa & convert some $ to pesos. Local exchange rates highly variable and no credit cards for gas.
Overall, I would love to return to Akumal, and would not hesitate to stay at Casa Caribe again."

"Our family of 5 greatly enjoyed a 3 night stay in a 3 BR at Del Sol Beachfront. There was plenty of room, the AC worked very well, the beds were firm and very comfortable. Ocean views fantastic and excellent snorkeling right out the front door. Able to swim with the green turtles! Everything was excellent."

"The apartment was great, extremely clean, we had all we needed and the staff was very friendly and very helpful. The water system is an excellent feature. The convenient store across from the place was very helpful and the lady neighbor with the eatery is still there. We enjoyed her empanadas for breakfast one day.
Staying in Casita Maria/Akumal was an excellent choice. Staying away from the crowds and the “more commercial” area gave us the vacation feeling we were looking for. We enjoyed seeing the Iguanas, Hermit crabs, turtles nesting at night (twice). This was our first time snorkeling…and what a place to start!!! We were all in awe! We went to Xcacel (Stunning beach), Akumal Bay (twice), Chichen Itza, Rio Secreto and Xel-há. All great places.
We ate at La Buena Vida twice (five minutes walk from the apt, the food was great and our boys asked to go back after the first time); Oscar and Lalo (via Tulum - excellent food and excellent service); my son had what he thought was the best smoothie of his life at Turtle Bay Café and Bakery, and my husband and I had the best dinner at La Lunita (down the road, after Playa Caribe).
Sadly, Half Moon Bay was covered with Sargassum seaweed. Which from what we heard has been impacting all beaches from Cancun down to Tulum. The bay is not very appealing and the smell is very strong so very few people ventured to snorkeling or even swimming there.
Luckily for us, Xcacel and Akumal Bay waters were very clean. And Xel-ha and Rio Secreto had no issues with the seaweed. So, even though we were disappointed at first, our vacation was not greatly impacted by it. We still think those were the greatest beaches we had ever visited."
