"This was our first Mexican vacation that wasn't in a resort. It was spring break with our 18 year old son, my lovely wife and his brother, whom we kidnapped from Iowa.
Amanecer Akumal proved a delightful, freeing experience for us. It felt not only more authentic but like you were living there for a moment instead of just vacationing.
The unit itself is loaded with Mexican charm: serious dark hard wood doors and accents, amazing tile work, a soaking tub in the master bedroom that's a hot tub sans jets, a well-equipped kitchen and a spacious dining/living room area.
But we especially enjoyed the common areas: a small pool (which has the kind of built-in stools you find in swim-up bars) on a downstairs patio, and a table with chairs on the rooftop patios, where we spent nights drinking Sols, watching the stars and getting to know our fascinating neighbors from Portland, Ore., Nick and Gail.
You don't need to rent a car. You can spend a week walking to Yal-Kul, Half Moon Bay or Akumal Bay (or renting bikes for $8 nearby) for the epic snorkeling. But I'm such an activities director (if it's Wednesday, it Chiichan Itza), a car proved invaluable.
Fernando (our groundskeeper and maintenance
guy) and Martha (our maid) couldn't have been more friendly and helpful.
We may be done with the mega resorts. Better to really feel the experience of Mexico instead of being insulated from it."

"We have just had the best holiday of our lives at Casa Houston. The house is more spacious and attractive even in real life than it already appears in the photos. Plenty of room to sleep peacefully (listening to the surf, cooled by the fans and the sea breezes), to cook (though the next door housekeeper Gloria makes absolutely delicious meals for you on request), and to lounge around outside and down the steps on the beautiful white sandy beach. You can look in both directions all along the beach as far as the eye can see and day after day spot almost no one else there. The caretakers for the property are lovely people who rake the sand, clean the house, and tend to all the facilities. The local area has many great restaurants, especially in Tulum town. And the manager's brother Hugo Estrada (website yourgreenguide) offers wonderful adventurous tours of the sea (snorkelling, Dolphins, turtles) and the lagoons (crocodiles, monkeys, Mayan ruins, mangroves). And so much enthusiastic knowledge of the wildlife. We very much hope to go back. It is the real deal for family adventure. Thank you to the Casa Houston team!"

"My husband, our 2 Chihuahuas and I just left Hill Haven after a 2 day stay. I can not say enough good things about this place. It was spotless, every little detail is thought through. Top of the line appliances in a beautiful kitchen. Wall mounted TV's in both rooms. Remote control fans, AC a gorgeous bathroom with walk in shower. Honestly the pictures do not do it justice. Everything you could possibly want to do in Playa is minutes away. Lizardo and his family were very nice and friendly, we thoroughly enjoyed meeting them. The king size bed was heaven, quality linens and simply gorgeous décor and furnishes throughout. We will definitely be back."
