Florianopolis is possibly most famous for its beaches and excellent surfing conditions. The city hosts one of the most prestigious World Tour Surfing events, and is the only venue in South America to do so. The competition is usually held in Praia Mole which is just two kilometers from the quaint fishing village of Barra da Lagoa. Bara da Lagoa is not very commercialized which is part of its attraction. The area is known as the “Bunny Slope” of surfing as it is the ideal place to learn. The beach stretches for almost 15 kilometers in a cove where turtles and penguins often come to breed. It’s the perfect place to sunbathe or take a long leisurely stroll. Other top surfing beaches include the Campeche Beach which is five kilometers long and has large turbulent waves. Joaquina Beach has been famous as a favorite surf spot since the early 1970s. The beach has excellent tourist facilities with a number of restaurants, shops and beach bars on site. You can also rent beach chairs, umbrellas, surfboards and boogie boards from local vendors.
