  • RONGOTAI - my favourite place in the world

"Rongotai is my favourite spot on the planet. As a cosmopolitan child of the North, I had the luxury of growing up under Northland skies alongside East Coast beaches. Rongotai gives me the opportunity to be once again enchanted by both. The night skies, in particular, give me that sense of being totally encompassed by the immense expanse of the star studded sky, punctuated by the reliable blink of the Manganui Harbour entrance lighthouse (a sensation akin to night sailing). Another enchanting feature of Rongotai is the scope of panorama which includes views of the sun as it rises above the pastoral landscape - bucolic scenes of cattle on green hills - in the East and sets at dusk over the Manganui harbour entrance. Apart from the powerful and exquisite scenery I enjoy the minimalist beauty of the house, complete with Phillipe Starke fittings, which unobtrusively complements its surroundings. The sensation on arrival is one of simple surrender to and total immersion in nature at its very best. Alas for me its hard not to wax lyrical as Rongotai exemplifies the environment in all its magnificent splendour – there’s simply no place I’d rather be."

  • Hawkesbury Homestead Vacation

"During our recent New Zealand vacation, three couples, all from the US, stayed at the Hawkesbury Homestead for a few days. Hawkesbury is an old farmhouse that has been updated and is located among vineyards in the Marlborough wine region of New Zealand. The 3 bedroom, 3-1/2 baths were more than adequate for the 6 of us, and the kitchen and dining area are quite spacious. We enjoyed the large sitting area also. Hawkesbury comes with a very good WiFi system at no extra cost, and there is also a desktop computer that is hardwired with broadband, and internet speed was excellent. The house was clean, well stocked with cooking utensils, and the kitchen pantry contained adequate supplies of spices, salt, pepper, etc. There is a small supermarket less than 5 minutes away in Renwick, and a larger supermarket and many other amenities in Blenheim, approximately 10 km away. There was a Gala apple tree loaded with apples in the back yard for our enjoyment, and we picked several to take with us upon our departure for the North Island. There was also a grapefruit tree and lots of walnuts for our use. The owners met us upon our arrival with a delicious cheese board and their private label Sauvignon Blanc, and gave us a good tour of the house. The Hawkesbury and First Landing Sauvignon Blanc that they provided (rent for a week and you get 6 bottles) was as good if not better than any other Sauvignon Blanc that we found. The location is wonderful. There is one winery within easy walking distance, and numerous wineries, some with outstanding restaurants (the restaurants at Brancott and Rock Ferry were particularly good), within a few minutes by car or bicycle (four bicycles are available at Hawkesbury). The Marlborough area reminded us of the Napa Valley in the US with the outstanding wineries and beautiful vineyards. Hawkesbury's location is convenient for day trips to nearby attractions such as Picton, Queen Charlotte Trace, Nelson, and others. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hawkesbury and recommend it to anyone planning a New Zealand vacation. If we are fortunate enough to vacation again in New Zealand, we will certainly include a few days at Hawkesbury in our plans."

  • Oak Hill Gang

"Our group of eight (four couples) were warmly greeted by Ann after a beautiful welcome drive down the high green hedge lined path leading to a home I can only describe as an idyllic paradise! We pulled up to a home whose porch was surrounded by beautiful flowers while to our left was a tree covered area with a koi pond and a trellis that called us to see the other side of this gorgeous "secret garden". The grounds of several acres is well landscaped with numerous fruit trees. We enjoyed sitting on the back porch and taking in the surrounding beauty. Whether one looked out from the spacious kitchen, or from each of the four Bedrooms windows, we knew we would treasure this experience forever. Accommodations: Excellent. (Bed, linens). View: Excellent. Location: Excellent- country/quiet yet close to sightseeing & activities. Recommend:Highly."

  • Like staying at a friend's house

"I happily recommend this modern, clean and well-equipped property. It felt like I had taken over a friend's apartment for a week, because everything you could want in a vacation rental is here. Good computer connection, well equiped kitchen with all the extras provided to make a good meal (spices, flour, oil, etc.), comfortable bed, roomy shower. Very nice outdoor area too, with barbeque and outdoor table set. Excellent and friendly communications with the owner. A short walk to the bus into central Auckland (no transfers required, about 1 hour), or else bus and ferry. Howich itself a nice little village with decent restaurants, and a supermarket less than five minutes walk away."
