The name Sun Valley is used to describe the resort itself and the region generally--the valley area south of Hailey and the city of Ketchum. To get to Sun Valley travel could not be easier. Just 2.5 hours drive through scenic vistas from the major airport at Boise, the area is also served by Friedman Memorial Airport which is less than 15 miles away. By road, the Sun Valley is easily accessible from Interstate 85 and State Highway 75 running through the region. Famous for its great ski conditions, the weather goes from the 20s Fahrenheit in winter to the high 60s Fahrenheit in summer.

It is also an archeological area with almost 1,500 heritage sites to discover. It offers a great opportunity to learn about the area and its archeology, and understand the importance of the natural environment. The area has a wealth of hiking and backpacking trails, horseback riding, mountain biking, trail biking, and both lake and river fishing.

There is no better way to get a feel for how the original settlers and inhabitants explored the area than on horseback. The area has some spectacular riding trails, one of the best of which is Cold Canyon. It is a scenic ride, best seen in late summer and early fall when the fall colors are in their prime. Many of these trails are closed to motorized vehicles, making for safe, scenic, peaceful rides.

The fishing season starts in May, usually on Memorial Day, and licenses can be obtained at local stores. The main fishing areas include Big Wood River, the North and Mile Fork of the Boise River, and part of the Payette River. Species in abundance in the rivers include several varieties of trout, such as rainbow, golden, brook and cutthroat. The best early season fishing is at the Salmon River Drainage.
