Another great way to explore Dauphin Island is to rent bicycles and follow the many winding trails that criss-cross the island. At the Marina, you can enjoy a pleasure boat cruise or a sail on the bay. There are also several boat charters that offer deep sea fishing. These can be booked at the marina. The many parks are perfect for picnicking and bird-watching. Some of the parks occasionally host fresh produce markets in season. The beaches of Dauphin Island are some of its greatest attractions. Beautiful, white and sandy, they stretch for miles along the length of the island. Untouched and undeveloped, the beaches are perfect for that early morning sunrise stroll. The fishing pier was once a popular sport for angling enthusiasts but shifts in the tides and currents have left it sitting high and dry on a sand bank. The pier can still be accessed for viewing and has some shops and a function room that is available for weddings and other events. It's hoped that in time currents will one day bring water below the pier so that it can once again become a fishing haven.

Getting to Dauphin Island

There is a four-mile bridge that connects Dauphin Island to the Alabama mainland. Travelling south from Mobile, follow highway 193; this will take you across the bridge and to the water tower intersection. Turning east will take you to the bird sanctuary, campgrounds and Fort Gaines. To the west are the public beaches and the fishing pier.
